The king telling Ayaz to choose between pardon and retaliation, for whatever he does here of justice and kindness is right, and in each there are expediencies, for in justice there are a thousand kindnesses contained, and 'there is life for you in retaliation.' He who dislikes retaliation considers only the life of the killer, and not the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be innocent and preserved within the fortress of fear of punishment.›
