Furthermore, that light manifests itself from within the عارف's secret to people without the عارف's word or deed, even more than it manifests through his word and deed, just as when the sun rises high, there is no need for a rooster's crow, a muezzin's call, or other signs. 19 beyts

But God Almighty concealed wrath in gentleness and gentleness in wrath—a reversed horseshoe, deception, and God's cunning—so that those of discernment and those who 'see with God's light' may be distinguished from those who see only the present and the apparent, for 'that He may test which of you is best in deed.' 39 beyts

Explanation that intellect and spirit are imprisoned in water and clay, like Harut and Marut in the well of Babel. 21 beyts

Explanation that everything other than God is both eater and eaten, like the bird that intended to hunt a locust and was preoccupied with hunting the locust, unaware of the hungry falcon behind its back intending to hunt it. Now, O human, do not be safe from the hunter and eater of yourself, even if you do not see it with the eye, see it with the eye of indication and warning until the eye also opens. 46 beyts

They asked for their lives, and he said, 'I will grant clemency only if you bring me a man named Abu Bakr from this city as a gift.' 63 beyts
Continuation of the story of the gazelle and the donkeys' stable. 24 beyts
Interpretation of 'I see seven fat cows being devoured by seven lean ones.' God had created those lean cows with the attribute of hungry lions, so they ate those seven fat cows with appetite. Although those imaginations appeared in the dream as cows, you should grasp the meaning. 8 beyts
Explanation that Abraham's (peace be upon him) killing of the rooster was a sign of crushing and conquering which blameworthy and destructive quality in the seeker's inner being? 22 beyts
Interpretation of 'We have certainly created man in the best of stature; then We return him to the lowest of the low.' If he is noble, he will honor you; if he is base, he will abandon you. And that companion is your deed, so improve it as much as you can.' The Messenger of God spoke truth. 22 beyts
Interpretation of 'And He is with you.' 11 beyts
In the interpretation of Mustafa's saying (peace be upon him): 'Whoever makes his concerns one single concern, God will suffice him for all his other concerns. And whoever is distracted by many concerns, God cares not in which valley He destroys him.' 21 beyts
On the meaning of this couplet: 'If you walk the path, the path will open for you / And if you become nothing, you will be led to existence.' 14 beyts
The story of the person who claimed prophethood. They asked him, 'What have you eaten that you are confused and speaking nonsense?' He said, 'If I had found something to eat, I would neither be confused nor speaking nonsense, for every good word spoken to those who are not its people is nonsense, even if they are commanded to speak nonsense.' 30 beyts
The cause of common enmity and their living as strangers to God's saints, who call them to truth and to the water of eternal life. 22 beyts
Explanation that when an evil person becomes empowered in wickedness and sees the effect of the righteous's fortune, he becomes a devil and prevents good out of envy, just as Satan, whose harvest is burnt, wishes for everyone else's harvest to be burnt: 'Have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays?' 26 beyts
Supplication 29 beyts
The king asking the claimant to prophethood: 'What will be with a true and established messenger that he may bestow upon someone, or what gift will be found in his company and service, apart from verbal advice?' 16 beyts
The story of the lover who enumerated his services and fidelities to his beloved, and the long nights when 'their sides avoid their beds,' and the destitution and burning thirst of long days. He said, 'I know no service but this. If there is another service, guide me, for I am obedient to whatever you command, even if it is to enter fire like Abraham (peace be upon him), or to fall into the mouth of a sea monster like Jonah (peace be upon him), or to be killed seventy times like George (peace be upon him), or to become blind from weeping like Shu'aib (peace be upon him).' And the fidelity and self-sacrifice of the prophets (peace be upon them) are countless. And the beloved's answer to him. 23 beyts
Someone asked a wise gnostic: 'If someone cries aloud, sighs, and laments during prayer, does their prayer become invalid?' He replied: 'That is called tears. It depends on what the one crying has seen. If they have seen the longing for God and are crying, or regret for a sin, their prayer will not be spoiled; rather, it will reach perfection, for 'there is no prayer except with presence of heart.' But if they have seen a physical ailment or the separation of a child, their prayer will be spoiled, for the essence of prayer is the abandonment of the body and the abandonment of a child, like Abraham who sacrificed his child for the completion of prayer, and gave his body to Nimrod's fire. And the command came to Mustafa (peace be upon him) with these qualities: 'So follow the religion of Abraham,' 'Indeed, there has been for you an excellent example in Abraham.' 6 beyts
A murid entered the service of the Sheikh—and I don't mean a Sheikh old in years but old in intellect and gnosis, even if he is Jesus (peace be upon him) in the cradle or John (peace be upon him) in a children's school. The murid saw the Sheikh weeping and wept in agreement. When he finished and came out, another murid, who was more aware of the Sheikh's state, rushed out after him out of zealousness. He said to him, 'Brother, I must tell you, by God, by God, do not think or say that the Sheikh was weeping and I was weeping too, for you must perform thirty years of selfless spiritual exercises and cross impassable obstacles and seas full of monsters and high mountains full of lions and leopards to reach the Sheikh's weeping, or not. If you do reach it, you will say 'the earth has been rolled up for me' many times.' 62 beyts
The story of the slave girl who fornicated with her mistress's donkey, and how she had trained it like a goat or a bear to fornicate human-like, and she would insert a gourd onto the donkey's penis so it wouldn't exceed the limit. The mistress found out but didn't notice the detail of the gourd. She sent the slave girl away on a pretext to a distant place and then coupled with the donkey without the gourd, and died disgracefully. The slave girl returned late and wailed, 'Oh my soul and oh my bright eye, you saw the penis but didn't see the gourd! You saw the organ but not the other!' 'Every incomplete is cursed,' meaning every incomplete gaze and understanding is cursed. Otherwise, those with apparent physical deficiencies are forgiven, not cursed, as it is written: 'There is no blame on the blind,' negating blame, cursing, reproof, and wrath. 97 beyts
An analogy for the Sheikh's teaching to his murids and the Prophet's to his community, for they cannot bear direct teaching from God and are not familiar with God, just as a parrot is not familiar with the form of a human to receive teaching from him. God Almighty holds the Sheikh like a mirror before the murid, like a parrot, and teaches from behind the mirror: 'Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it. Indeed, it is only a revelation revealed.' This is the beginning of an endless matter, just as the parrot's beak movements within the mirror, which you call imagination, are without its will or control, a reflection of the outer parrot that is learning, not a reflection of the teacher behind the mirror. But the outer parrot's speaking is the action of that teacher. So this is an analogy, not an exact similitude. 15 beyts
A man of heart saw a pregnant dog, and the puppies inside her belly were barking. He was astonished, for the wisdom of a dog's bark is to guard, but barking inside the mother's womb is not guarding. Also, barking is for seeking help or milk, etc., and there are no such benefits there. When he came to himself, he supplicated to God, 'And no one knows its interpretation except God.' The answer came: 'That is the image of a people who have not emerged from the veil, whose inner eyes have not opened, yet they claim insight and utter sayings from which they gain no strength or help, nor do the listeners gain guidance or growth.' 28 beyts
The story of the people of Dharwan and their envy of the dervishes, whose father, out of simplicity, gave most of the garden's income to the poor. When it was grapes, he gave a tenth; when raisins and syrup, a tenth; when sweets and puddings, a tenth; and from green fodder, a tenth. When he threshed it in the threshing floor, he gave a tenth from the mixed heap; when the wheat was separated from the chaff, a tenth; when he made it into flour, a tenth; when he made it into dough, a tenth; and when he made it into bread, a tenth. Consequently, God Almighty had placed a blessing in that garden and harvest, so that all garden owners would be in need of him, both for fruit and for money, and he would need no one from them. His children saw the expenditure of the tenth but did not see that blessing, like the unfortunate woman who did not see the gourd but saw the donkey. 64 beyts
Explanation that God's gift and power are not dependent on receptivity, unlike human gifts which require receptivity, because the gift is eternal and receptivity is temporal. The gift is an attribute of God and receptivity is an attribute of the creature, and the eternal cannot be dependent on the temporal, otherwise temporality would be impossible. 19 beyts
At the beginning of Adam's physical creation (peace be upon him), Gabriel (peace be upon him) was commanded to go and take a handful of dust from the earth, and in one narration, handfuls from every direction. 25 beyts
Sending Mika'il (peace be upon him) to take a handful of dust from the earth for the composition of the blessed body of the Father of Mankind, the Caliph of God, to whom the angels prostrated and whom they taught, Adam (peace be upon him). 27 beyts
The story of Jonah's people (peace be upon him) is a statement and proof that supplication and entreaty ward off heavenly calamities, and God Almighty is a free agent, so supplication and reverence are beneficial before Him. Philosophers say that the agent acts by nature and by cause, not as a free agent, so supplication does not change nature. 12 beyts
Sending Israfil (peace be upon him) for dust, to take a handful of dust for the composition of Adam's body (peace be upon him). 29 beyts

Explanation that any creature from whom you experience injustice is truly like an instrument. The Gnostic is one who returns to God, not to the instrument. And if he returns to the instrument outwardly, he does so not out of ignorance but for a benefit, just as Bayazid (may God sanctify his secret) said: 'For many years I have not spoken to creatures nor heard speech from them, but people imagine that I speak to them and hear from them, because they do not see the Greater Speaker, for they are but an echo to Him.' In my state, a wise listener pays no attention to an echo, just as the well-known proverb says: 'The wall said to the peg, 'Why do you split me?' The peg replied, 'Look to who is hammering me.' 27 beyts
The answer came: 'He whose gaze falls not on causes, sickness, or sword wounds, will also not gaze upon your action, Azra'il, for you too are a cause, though more hidden than those causes.' And it may be that it is not hidden from the sick person, for 'He is nearer to him than you are, but you do not see.' 33 beyts
On the gravity of worldly delights and sweets, and how they prevent one from God's food, as He said: 'Hunger is the food of God; He revives the bodies of the truthful with it,' meaning, 'in hunger is the food of God.' And His saying: 'I spend the night with my Lord, who feeds me and gives me drink.' And His saying: 'They are provided for, rejoicing.' 17 beyts
The answer to the ignorant one who said: 'This world would be pleasant if there were no death, and worldly kingship would be pleasant if it were not subject to decline,' and so on with such empty boasts. 12 beyts

The story of Ayaz and his chamber for his sandals and fur coat, and his fellow attendants supposing that he had a treasure in it due to the strong door and heavy lock. 35 beyts
Explanation that what is being explained is the form of the story, and that form is what is suitable for those who grasp forms and suitable for the mirror of their perception. And from the sacredness that is the reality of this story, speech is ashamed of this revelation, and in embarrassment, it loses its head, beard, and pen. And for the wise, a hint suffices. 26 beyts
The wisdom of looking at the sandal and fur coat, as in 'Let man consider from what he was created.' 9 beyts

And His saying: 'Whenever you look at someone with an evil eye, you look from the circle of your own existence. A crooked base casts a crooked shadow.' 25 beyts
Explanation of the unity of lover and beloved from the perspective of reality, even though they are opposites in that need is the opposite of independence, just as a mirror is formless and plain, and formlessness is the opposite of form. But there is a unity between them in reality, the explanation of which is long, and for the wise, a hint suffices. 21 beyts
A beloved asked a lover: 'Do you love yourself more, or me?' He replied: 'I have died to myself and live by you. I have become nothing of myself and my attributes, and have become existent by you. I have forgotten my own knowledge and have become knowing through your knowledge. I have forgotten my own power and have become powerful through your power. If I love myself, I love you; and if I love you, I love myself. Whoever has the mirror of certainty, even if he sees himself, he sees God.' 'I bring forth My attributes to My creation. Whoever sees you has seen Me, and whoever intends you has intended Me,' and so on. 30 beyts
The slandering emir arriving with his officers at midnight, opening Ayaz's chamber, seeing the sandal and fur coat hanging, and supposing it was a trick and a cover. Digging holes in every corner of the house where they suspected, bringing well-diggers, and piercing the walls, finding nothing, and becoming ashamed and despairing. Just as the suspicious and imaginative ones regarding the prophets and saints, who said they were sorcerers and self-made, seeking leadership, after investigation, they become ashamed and it avails them nothing. 29 beyts
The informers returning from Ayaz's chamber to the king, with empty bags and ashamed, like those who were suspicious of the prophets (peace be upon them) at the time of the manifestation of their innocence and purity: 'On the Day when some faces will be bright and some faces will be black,' and His saying, 'You will see those who lied about God, their faces blackened.' 14 beyts

The king telling Ayaz to choose between pardon and retaliation, for whatever he does here of justice and kindness is right, and in each there are expediencies, for in justice there are a thousand kindnesses contained, and 'there is life for you in retaliation.' He who dislikes retaliation considers only the life of the killer, and not the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be innocent and preserved within the fortress of fear of punishment. 25 beyts
The king urging Ayaz to quickly settle this judgment and not delay, and not to say 'the days are between us,' for 'waiting is red death,' and Ayaz's reply to the king. 16 beyts

What is suitable about serving a stone idol and sacrificing one's life and wealth for it, for a soul that knows the Creator of the heavens and the earth and all beings is God, All-Hearing, All-Seeing, Present, Watchful, Dominant, Jealous, and so on? 65 beyts
A story explaining sincere repentance: just as milk, once out of the breast, does not return, so too one who makes sincere repentance never recalls that sin with longing; rather, their aversion increases with every moment. And that aversion is proof that they have found the pleasure of acceptance, that the former lust has become flavorless, and this has taken its place. 'Love's battle is fought only by another love; why not seek a better beloved from Him?' And if one's heart returns to that sin with longing, it is a sign that they have not found the pleasure of acceptance, and the pleasure of acceptance has not taken the place of the pleasure of sin. 'We will ease his way to ease' has not occurred; 'We will ease his way to adversity' remains upon him. 14 beyts
Explanation that the supplication of the accomplished Gnostic and his request from God is like God's request from Himself, as in 'I was his hearing and his sight and his tongue and his hand,' and His saying 'And you threw not when you threw, but Allah threw,' and there are many verses, Hadiths, and traditions on this. And an explanation of the reason God orchestrates events to bring the sinner to sincere repentance. 31 beyts

And the details of this are many, and God is the Guide. 22 beyts
The story of the woodcutter's donkey seeing the fine Arab horses in the royal stable and wishing for that fortune, in the admonition that one should wish for nothing but forgiveness, favor, and guidance, for if one is in a hundred kinds of suffering, when the pleasure of forgiveness is present, all becomes sweet. Any other fortune you wish for untried is accompanied by a suffering you do not see, just as from every trap, the bait is visible and the snare hidden. You are caught in this one trap, wishing, 'If only I had gone with those baits!' You imagine those baits are without a trap. 21 beyts

He replied, 'It's for anyone who thinks ill of me; I'll rip open his belly.' The sodomite kept moving over him, saying, 'Praise be to God, I think no ill of you.' 'My verse is not a verse; it's a realm. My jest is not a jest; it's teaching.' 'Indeed, God is not ashamed to present an example of a mosquito or what is greater than it' – that is, what is greater than it in changing souls through denial – 'what did God intend by this example?' And then He replies that He intended 'He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby,' for every trial is like a scale: many are honored by it, and many are frustrated. And in this community, it is a transformation of the heart, and on the Day of Resurrection, the body will take the form of the heart. We seek refuge in God. 9 beyts

It is neither inside this world nor outside this world, neither below nor above, neither connected nor separate, without how or why.
