M6:4540

In the same way that believers should give thanks for spiritual freedom, all of nature silently expresses its gratitude for the life-giving justice of God, symbolized by the rain and the arrival of spring.
This couplet is part of Rumi's defense of the Prophet Muhammad's designation of Ali as his successor, a spiritual guide or mawlā who brings freedom. Rumi has just urged believers to rejoice in this spiritual liberty, just as cypress trees and lilies do (M6:4538).
Here, he extends the metaphor. The natural world, though lacking a physical tongue, expresses its gratitude through its very existence. The flourishing cypress and the vibrant meadow are themselves a form of praise, a silent "thank you" for the water that sustains them and for the "justice" (ʿadl) of the new spring. Spring's justice is its perfect, life-giving balance, which revives the dead earth and allows every plant to grow. This is not just a pretty image; it's an argument by analogy. If even plants can express gratitude for their physical sustenance, how much more should human beings give thanks for the spiritual sustenance and freedom offered by a true guide?
The gratitude is not spoken in words but is embodied in the beauty, health, and vitality of the plants. Their flourishing state is their praise. This connects to a core Sufi idea: that the entire cosmos is in a state of worship, and that true gratitude is a state of being, not just a verbal formula.
- Literally 'without a tongue'; speechless, silent, non-verbal. Here it emphasizes that gratitude can be expressed through one's state or condition, not just through words.
- Justice, equity, balance. In this context, it refers to the perfect, life-giving order of nature as ordained by God, where spring arrives at the right time to revive the world.
- New spring; the season of spring. It symbolizes renewal, resurrection, and divine grace manifesting in the physical world.
