Rumi opens Book 2 of the Masnavi with a stark set of contrasting images to define the human condition. This couplet presents the central choice facing the soul: the spiritual life versus the worldly one.

It is placed "beside" (pahlū-ye) the "lowly world" (dunyā-ye dūn), the realm of transient desires, ego, and illusion. The second line powerfully restates this proximity using a visceral image: "pure milk" (shīr-e ṣāfī), symbolizing pure spiritual nourishment and life-giving truth, flows right next to "rivers of blood" (jūhā-ye khūn), which represent passion, violence, corruption, and spiritual death.
The key insight is their nearness. The sacred and the profane are not in separate realms; they are adjacent, and the danger of contamination is immediate. As the very next couplet warns, one careless step in the world of desire (dunyā) can cause your pure milk to turn into blood, corrupting your spiritual nature. This sets the stage for the story of Adam's fall, which Rumi introduces two lines later as the archetypal example of this tragic mixing.

نکتهٔ اصلی که مولانا با این بیت بیان میکند، شکنندگی و آسیبپذیری حالت روحانی انسان است. او در بیت بعدی بلافاصله هشدار میدهد که اگر یک قدم «بیاحتیاط» در این دنیا برداری، آن شیر پاک با خون مخلوط شده و به خون تبدیل میشود (شیر تو خون میشود از اختلاط). این همان اتفاقی است که برای آدم در بهشت رخ داد: یک گام اشتباه به سوی «ذوق نفس»، او را از مقام قرب الهی دور کرد. بنابراین، این بیت فقط یک توصیف نیست، بلکه هشداری جدی برای سالک است تا در این جهان که مرز میان پاکی و آلودگی بسیار باریک است، با احتیاط و آگاهی کامل گام بردارد.
