M1:2359

The spiritual path of the dervish operates on a level that your worldly understanding cannot grasp, so you must not view it with a weak or dismissive attitude.
This couplet is the core of a husband's admonishment to his wife, who has been looking down on the poor and spiritually devoted (the darvīshān). The husband argues that her judgment is based on superficial appearances, like a slave-trader who hides a flawed slave under clothing. Wealth, he says, is a cloak for a person's faults, while the dervish's apparent poverty reveals their true, unadorned state.
The beyt insists that the 'work' or 'business' (kār) of the dervish—their inner life of devotion, their relationship with God, and their spiritual state—is not something that can be measured by external wealth or social status. It is 'beyond your comprehension' (varā-ye fahm-e tust). Therefore, to look upon it 'feebly' or 'faintly' (sust sust)—that is, with a weak, superficial, and contemptuous gaze—is to fundamentally misunderstand reality. Rumi is making a critical distinction between the visible world of material lack and the invisible world of spiritual richness, which the dervish inhabits.
- کار درویشی
- Literally 'the work/business of the dervish.' Refers to the entire spiritual enterprise of the Sufi path: its practices, inner states, and ultimate purpose, which is union with God.
- ورای
- An adverb meaning 'beyond,' 'above,' or 'transcending.' It signifies that something is on a completely different plane of existence or understanding.
- سست سست
- An adverbial phrase formed by repeating 'sust' (weak, feeble, lax). The repetition intensifies the meaning, implying a gaze that is not just weak but also dismissive, superficial, and lacking in conviction or respect.
