This couplet marks a turning point in the story. Jesus, having failed to dissuade his foolish companion with reason and warnings, now turns directly to God. His question is not merely rhetorical; it is a genuine plea for understanding. He perceives a hidden dynamic, an 'esrār' (mystery), at play. Why would someone so spiritually unprepared be consumed by a desire for a power that is not his to wield?

The term 'bīgār' is crucial. It means forced, unpaid, and ultimately useless labor. Jesus sees the fool's ambition not as a noble spiritual quest but as a pointless, burdensome task that will yield nothing but trouble. The fool is fixated on reviving the bodies of strangers while ignoring the spiritual death of his own soul—a central theme Rumi develops in the following verses. Jesus's question to God frames the fool's desire as a symptom of a deeper spiritual illness, one that defies ordinary logic and requires divine explanation.
