Our limited human senses and intellect are like a single drop of water compared to the vast, pure river of divine reality and spiritual perception.
This couplet serves as the moral pivot of the story about the desert Arab who brings a jug of rainwater to the Caliph in Baghdad. The Arab, coming from a place of scarcity, believes his gift is precious. He is unaware that the Caliph's city is built on the banks of the mighty Tigris river, an immense source of fresh water. Rumi uses this story as an allegory for the human spiritual condition.
Our ordinary senses (ḥisshā) and rational understanding (idrākāt) are the equivalent of the Arab's jug of water. We treasure them, believing they give us a true picture of reality. However, when brought before the divine presence—the 'Caliph'—they are revealed to be infinitesimally small. They are but a single drop compared to the 'river of purity' (nahr-i ṣafā), which represents the boundless ocean of divine knowledge, direct spiritual insight, and unfiltered reality that the saints and prophets experience. The couplet thus highlights the inadequacy of conventional human faculties for grasping ultimate truth, urging the seeker to connect to a much greater source.
- Idrākāt (sg. idrāk). An Arabic loanword for 'perceptions,' 'cognitions,' or 'intellectual grasps.' It refers to the mind's ability to comprehend and process information through reason and the senses.
- Ḥisshā (sg. ḥiss). 'Senses.' From the Arabic word for sense or feeling. Here it refers to the five external senses through which we perceive the physical world.
- Nahr-i ṣafā. 'River of purity/clarity.' A metaphor for the stream of divine knowledge or spiritual reality, which is pure, boundless, and life-giving, in contrast to the limited and often murky data from our senses.
