The composition of the Masnavi resumed when Husam al-Din returned from a profound spiritual state that had temporarily taken him away.
This couplet marks the beginning of Book 2, explaining the long pause after Book 1. Rumi attributes the delay to his beloved disciple and catalyst, Husam al-Din Chalabi, who had been absorbed in a deep mystical state.
Rumi uses the metaphor of a celestial rider to describe Husam al-Din's spiritual journey. He had ascended to the "zenith of the heavens" (اوج آسمان), an image of a spiritual miʿrāj or ascension into divine realities, which the next couplet confirms. The image of turning back the "reins" (عنان) signifies his voluntary return from that state of absorption to the worldly plane. It was only when Husam al-Din came back to earth, so to speak, that the creative inspiration for the Masnavi could flow through Rumi once more.
