M2:3395 — پس چه چاره جز پناه چاره‌گر / ناامیدی مس و اکسیرش نظر

This couplet comes at a critical juncture in the story of a man who claims God will not punish him for his sins. The prophet Shu'ayb (علیه السلام) has been explaining how persistent sin hardens the heart, making one blind to repentance and divine grace. The imagery of writing on paper (M2:3391-3394) illustrates how repeated transgressions obscure the 'writing' of the soul, making it illegible and dark. In this state of profound spiritual darkness and despair, the question arises: what hope is there?

Rumi's answer, through Shu'ayb, is that the only 'remedy' (چاره) is to seek refuge in the 'Healer' (چاره‌گر), which is God Himself. The second line employs a powerful alchemical metaphor: 'despair' (ناامیدی) is likened to 'copper' (مس), a base metal, while God's 'gaze' or 'attention' (نظر) is the 'elixir' (اکسیر). In alchemy, the elixir was believed to transmute base metals into gold. Here, it signifies that God's merciful attention can transform even the deepest despair and spiritual corruption into something precious and pure. It's a call to surrender one's hopelessness to the divine, trusting in God's transformative power.
