M3:4732 — ستر چه در پشم و پنبه آذرست / تا همی‌پوشیش او پیداترست

این بیت در ادامهٔ توصیف حال عاشقی است که از خود بی‌خود شده و زبانش به بیان اسرار معشوق باز شده است. مولانا این وضعیت را به آتشی تشبیه می‌کند که در پنبه و پشم افتاده باشد. پنبه و پشم، که خود مواد اشتعال‌زا هستند، نمادی از تلاش‌های بیهوده برای پوشاندن و پنهان کردن آن راز سوزانند.

تلاش برای «ستر» یا پوشاندن حقیقت عشق، خود باعث افشاگری بیشتر می‌شود. همان‌طور که هر لایه پنبه‌ای که روی آتش گذاشته شود، خود آتش می‌گیرد و آن را بزرگ‌تر و نمایان‌تر می‌کند، هر تلاشی برای پنهان کردن عشق الهی نیز تنها به آشکارتر شدن آن می‌انجامد. این یک حقیقت متناقض‌نما در عرفان است: حقیقتِ معشوق چنان قدرتمند و فراگیر است که هر حجابی، خود تبدیل به جلوه‌ای از او می‌شود و هر کوششی برای پنهان‌کاری، به اعتراف و افشاگری می‌انجامد.

This couplet comes from a section where the lover, having regained consciousness, turns to praise and gratitude for the Beloved. The preceding verses lament the inadequacy of language to describe the divine, suggesting that any attempt to speak of 'being' (هستی) only creates more veils. Here, Rumi uses a powerful metaphor: trying to conceal the Beloved is like trying to hide fire with wool and cotton. Not only is it impossible, but the very act of concealment (the wool and cotton) will be consumed by the fire, making its presence even more undeniable and destructive to the 'veil.'

In the context of the story, this speaks to the overwhelming nature of divine love and presence. The Beloved is not something that can be contained, obscured, or diminished. Any human effort to 'cover' or 'explain away' the divine only serves to highlight its inherent power and self-manifestation. The 'fire' here symbolizes the intense, consuming reality of God's love and essence, which cannot be suppressed by worldly coverings or intellectual constructs. The more one tries to deny or hide it, the more it bursts forth, revealing itself in its true, uncontainable form.
