The only thing preventing access to the spiritual reality offered by the Masnavi is the human ego's desires and empty cravings; without that obstacle, it is a source of endless spiritual nourishment.

Rumi immediately identifies the sole obstacle to entering: hawā (caprice, empty passion, literally 'air') and shahwat (carnal appetite, lust). در مقابل این آفت، مولانا تصویری دلنشین قرار میدهد: «شربت اندر شربت». این تعبیر کنایه از لذتهای معنوی پیاپی، معارف گوارا و تجربیات روحانی بیپایانی است که در این راه وجود دارد. پیام اصلی این است که راه حق در ذات خود تلخ و دشوار نیست؛ آنچه آن را سخت و بیثمر میکند، آلودگیهای درونی خود ماست. اگر انسان بتواند دهان خود را از این خواستههای نفسانی ببندد، چشمان باطنش برای دیدن حقایق آن جهان باز خواهد شد، همانطور که در ابیات بعدی توضیح داده میشود.
