M2:142 — گفت ای همراه آن نام سنی / که بدان مرده تو زنده می‌کنی

This couplet marks the foolish companion's initial, naive request to Jesus. Having seen a pile of ancient bones, he is captivated not by the spiritual reality behind resurrection, but by the desire to possess the tool for the miracle. He sees the divine Name as a kind of magical formula that can be learned and deployed, like a spell.

The companion's focus on the nām (Name) rather than the spiritual state required to invoke it is the core of his folly. Rumi uses this story to explore the difference between true spiritual authority, which flows from one's inner being and purity, and the superficial desire for power and control. Jesus's subsequent refusal highlights that divine secrets are not transferable bits of information but are entrusted only to those whose souls have been purified over lifetimes to handle such power responsibly. The companion wants the 'what' (the Name) without understanding the 'who' (the state of the speaker).
