این بیت، وجود جسمانی و نفسانی انسان را به شتری تشبیه میکند که به خوردن خارهای بیارزش دنیا عادت کرده، در حالی که روح الهی و شریف انسان، همچون سواری والا مقام، بر این جسم سوار است.
مولانا در اینجا یکی از تمثیلهای کلیدی خود را برای توصیف رابطهٔ روح و جسم به کار میگیرد. «وجود خارخوار» کنایه از نفس اماره یا جنبهٔ حیوانی و مادی انسان است که میل به لذتهای پست و رنجآور دنیوی دارد؛ درست مانند شتری که به جای گل و سبزه، به خوردن خار بیابان (مغیلان) تمایل دارد.

پیام اصلی این است که انسان نباید اجازه دهد که امیال نفسانی و جسمانیاش (شتر)، مسیر زندگی او را تعیین کند. بلکه باید به فرمان سوارِ الهیِ درون خود (روح) گوش دهد و این مرکب سرکش را به سوی مقصد حقیقی، یعنی گلستان معرفت الهی، هدایت کند. در ابیات بعدی، مولانا تأسف میخورد که این شتر، با وجود آنکه «تنگ گلی» (بار گل) بر پشت دارد، باز هم به دنبال خار و ریگ بیابان است.
