Translation & meaning
Translation: Those imaginations that are the snare of the saints / are the reflection of the moon-faced beauties of God's garden. Meaning: This verse asserts that the mental images and perceptions that captivate saints and mystics are not mere delusions; rather, they are true reflections of the transcendent, moon-faced beauties residing in God's divine garden.
Explanation
This stirring verse by Mawlana delves into one of the most profound and subtle functions of khayāl (imagination) in the mystical journey. I have often stated that khayāl in Mawlana's intellectual cosmos operates like a double-edged sword: it can be a dense veil, or an open bridge to reality.
Elsewhere, Mawlana speaks of a negative role for khayāl, where he states:
Dur-bāsh ghayrat-ash āmad khayāl Gard bar gard-i sarāpardah-yi jalāl
This dur-bāsh (a term for keeping people away from the path of a king or dignitary) refers to divine ghayrat (jealousy or protective zeal). The jealous God prevents the uninitiated from entering His realm of secrets, and khayāl here serves as an instrument of this divine jealousy. God sends khayālāt to distract these individuals, keeping them preoccupied with illusory forms and diverting them from the truth. This is the repulsive function of khayāl, entrapping humans in ephemeral images and blinding them to reality. This can be attributed to God's attributes of jalāl (majesty), akin to the mysterium tremendum (awe-inspiring) aspects of the divine.
However, in the verse we are discussing, Mawlana speaks of an entirely different, positive role for khayāl: “ān khayālātī keh dām-i awliyāst” (those imaginations that are the snare of the saints). This khayāl is not a veil; rather, it is a “snare” (dām) for the saints. Yet, this is not a snare of deception, but one that draws them towards the truth. Mawlana himself, in a tender ghazal from the Divan-e Shams, states:
Zi tu har hadiyah keh burdam be khayāl-i tu sipurdām Keh khayāl-i shakkarīn-at farr-o-sīmā-yi tu dārad
Imagine! The khayāl of the Beloved, even His mental image, carries the very glory and beauty of the real Beloved. It is so subtle and majestic that its manifestation in the realm of imagination possesses the same grandeur. These are khayālāt that possess 'attraction' and 'splendor,' manifesting in the hearts of gnostics and lovers, drawing them along. This can be linked to God's attributes of jamāl (beauty), analogous to the mysterium fascinans (fascinating) aspects of the divine.
Thus, “ān khayālātī keh dām-i awliyāst / aks-i mehruyān-i bostān-i khudāst” means these subtle perceptions are reflections of the moon-faced beauties residing in the divine garden (be it paradise or a state of divine presence). These are manifestations that appear to seekers in the world of imagination (which philosophers like Ibn al-Arabi termed khayāl-i munfaṣil or Suhrawardi the ʿālam-i khayāl), pulling their hearts towards the ultimate source of beauty.
An important point Mawlana emphasizes is that true love transcends mere form. Love for these khayālāt, though a bridge to truth, still belongs to a lower stage, that of being 'enamored of form' (maftūn-i ṣūrat). The perfected gnostic transcends even this stage, reaching love for the 'formless' (bī-ṣūrat). However, these sacred khayālāt are the initial steps and primary manifestations for commencing this journey and being drawn into love's snare. It is the snare of the saints, meaning an instrument that draws the saints toward the Beloved and connects them.
Key takeaways
- In Mawlana's view, khayāl (imagination) is a double-edged sword, capable of veiling truth or bridging to it.
- The 'snare of the saints' (dām-i awliyā) refers not to a trap of deception, but an attractive force drawing them towards the Divine.
- These imaginations are 'reflections' (aks) of transcendent beauties ('moon-faced beauties of God's garden') existing in the unseen realm.
- The imagination of the Beloved, even at a mental level, carries the grandeur and beauty of the real Beloved and can inspire mystical journey.
- This stage of love, while profound, is still within the realm of being 'enamored of form' (maftūn-i ṣūrat), with higher stages demanding love for the 'formless' (bī-ṣūrat).

- دام

- (ʿAks) Widerspiegelung, Abbild, Reflexion.
- (Bustān-i Khudā) Der Garten Gottes.
The mental images and visions that captivate God's saints are not delusions; rather, they are true reflections of the transcendent, spiritual beauties that reside in the divine realm.
This verse explores the dual nature of khayāl (imagination) in Rumi's thought. While imagination can be a veil that distracts the unworthy with illusions, for the awliyā (the saints or Friends of God), it serves a positive, attractive function.
Here, the imagination is a "snare" (dām), but not one of deception. It is a divine lure that captures the heart of the seeker and pulls them toward Reality. These captivating mental images—the visions that occupy the mystic's mind—are not baseless fantasies. They are described as a "reflection" (ʿaks) of real, transcendent beings: the "moon-faced beauties of God's garden." These beauties symbolize spiritual realities, angels, or perfected souls dwelling in the divine presence (the "garden"). Their beauty is so potent that even its reflection in the world of imagination has the power to enchant and guide the saint.
This concept draws on a key idea in Islamic mysticism: the imagination can act as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. The beauty perceived in a spiritual vision is a genuine foretaste of the divine beauty of the Beloved. However, Rumi also implies this is a stage on the path. While being "enamored of form" (maftūn-i ṣūrat) through such visions is a crucial step, the ultimate goal is to transcend all forms and images to love the "formless" (bī-ṣūrat) Divine Essence itself.

- دام
- Dām. A snare, trap, or net. Here, it is used metaphorically not as a tool of deception, but as an irresistible lure or divine stratagem that captures the heart for a higher purpose.
- Awliyā (Ar. pl. of walī). 'Friends of God,' saints, masters. In Sufism, those who have attained proximity to God and are under His special protection and guidance.
- ʿAks. A reflection, image, or picture. It implies a true, though mediated, representation of an original source, much like an image in a mirror.
- Meh-rūyān. 'Moon-faced ones.' A conventional Persian poetic term for people of extraordinary beauty. In a mystical context, it refers to spiritual beings or manifestations of divine beauty.
- Bustān. A garden, orchard, or glade. Here, it symbolizes a spiritual realm, Paradise, or the state of divine presence.
