Pada tahap awal perjalanan spiritual, seorang murid mengikuti jejak lahiriah sang guru; namun setelah itu, ia dibimbing oleh aroma spiritual atau esensi batiniah dari sang guru itu sendiri.
Bait ini adalah bagian dari perumpamaan tentang seorang pemburu yang melacak rusa kesturi. Rumi membandingkan seorang penempuh jalan spiritual (salik) dengan pemburu ini. Pada mulanya, sang pemburu (murid) harus mengikuti jejak kaki (gām) rusa (guru atau mursyid). Jejak ini melambangkan ajaran lahiriah, praktik ritual, dan bimbingan eksternal yang dapat diamati. Ini adalah tahap disiplin dan kepatuhan yang diperlukan.

However, this is only the preliminary phase. As the seeker progresses, a profound inner change occurs. They begin to perceive the "scent" of the divine presence directly, symbolized by the fragrance of the deer's musk-gland (nāf-e āhu). This internal, intuitive connection becomes the new guide (rahbar). The journey is no longer about painstakingly following external rules but about being drawn irresistibly by the scent of the destination itself. This shift from outward imitation to inward realization is a central theme in Sufism, marking the transition from a disciple's effort to the Beloved's direct pull.

اما این تنها مرحلهی آغازین است. اگر سالک در این مسیر صادق باشد و پیشرفت کند، به مرحلهای میرسد که دیگر نیازی به جستجوی رد پا ندارد. در این مرحله، رایحهی دلانگیز حقیقت، یعنی «بوی نافهی آهو»، به مشام جان او میرسد. این رایحه که نماد جاذبهی معنوی و کشش درونی است، خود به راهنمایی قدرتمندتر و مستقیمتر تبدیل میشود. همانطور که مولانا در بیت بعدی میگوید، یک منزل راه رفتن با این بوی خوش، بهتر از صد منزل جستجوی رد پا است. این بیت گذار از سلوک مبتنی بر کوشش و تقلید به سلوک مبتنی بر کشش و تحقیق را به زیبایی به تصویر میکشد.
