This couplet marks a pivotal turn in the prologue to Book 2. After celebrating the return of inspiration through his disciple Husam al-Din, Rumi immediately establishes the core discipline required for the spiritual journey: the control of the mouth. The mouth represents two primary worldly attachments: speech and consumption (eating and drinking). Rumi presents these not as neutral acts but as a chashm-band, a blindfold that actively blocks perception of the spiritual realm (ān jahān).
The logic is rooted in Sufi ascetic practice. Excessive talking fills the mind with ego and distraction, while excessive eating and drinking weigh down the spirit and fuel the lower self (nafs). By 'binding' or closing the mouth, the seeker starves these impulses. This act of deliberate sensory and physical fasting is what clears the inner eye—the 'eye of the heart' (chashm-i dil)—allowing it to see spiritual realities (ʿiyān, 'manifestly').
The surrounding verses intensify this warning. Rumi calls the mouth a 'gateway to hell' (M2:12) and compares indulging the appetites to mixing pure milk with rivers of blood (M2:13-14). He then provides the ultimate cautionary tale: Adam's single act of consumption, driven by the 'taste of the self' (dhawq-i nafs), caused his expulsion from Paradise (M2:15). The message is stark: the path to spiritual vision begins with the discipline of the body, and the mouth is its primary gate.
