Your spiritual companion is the very organ through which you see reality, so you must protect that relationship from any impurity or offense that could cloud your vision.
This couplet uses a powerful metaphor to explain the function of a true spiritual friend (yār). Rumi addresses the seeker as a "man of the hunt" (mard-e shekār), someone actively pursuing a goal—in this case, spiritual truth. The friend, he says, is not merely a helper but is the seeker's own eye.
Just as a hunter's success depends entirely on clear sight, the spiritual seeker's progress depends on the clarity and purity of their relationship with their guide or companion. The "twigs and the dust" (khas o khāshāk) represent anything that could obscure this vision: petty grievances, careless words, misunderstandings, or worldly attachments. The subsequent verses (M2:29-32) clarify that this dust is often stirred up by one's own speech or actions.
The instruction to "keep it clear" is therefore a command for vigilant self-awareness. The seeker must actively protect the friendship, which is their conduit to insight, from being contaminated by the ego's foolishness. If the 'eye' becomes clouded, the path disappears, and the hunt fails.

بنابراین، همانگونه که یک شکارچی مراقب چشمان خود است، سالک نیز باید از این «چشم معنوی» یعنی رابطهاش با دوست، مراقبت کند. «خس و خاشاک» در اینجا استعاره از هرگونه گفتار، رفتار یا نیّت ناشایستی است که این رابطه را تیره و کدر میکند: سخنان بیهوده، غیبت، سوءظن، رنجاندن خاطر و هر چیزی که صفا و شفافیت آینهوار این دوستی را از بین ببرد. بیت بعدی بلافاصله این موضوع را روشن میکند: «هین به جاروبِ زبان گردی مکن». یعنی با زبان خود گرد و غبار بر این چشم مپاشان.
