Translation & meaning
Translation: By scent, I discern from every garment Whether it be Joseph or an Ahriman.
Meaning: I possess an inner sense, a subtle spiritual intuition, that allows me to immediately recognize the true essence hidden beneath any outward form, distinguishing pure truth from insidious falsehood, much like a keen sense of smell identifies its source.
Explanation
This couplet originates from a story about Sultan Mahmud and a group of thieves, where one thief boasts of his skill in bū-bīnī (scent-detection) – the ability to discern the inner nature of things by their smell. However, for Mawlana, as I understand him, this seemingly mundane skill of smelling dirt to find minerals is elevated to a much profounder level: the art of rāz-shenāsi (secret-knowing), which is the essence of ʻirfān (gnosis). It is not merely a physical capacity to detect what lies beneath the earth, but a spiritual faculty to perceive hidden truths.
I interpret this as spiritual intuition or gnosis, for the very word ʻārif (gnostic) derives from ʻarf, meaning scent or fragrance. An ʻārif is one who 'smells' the truth. This couplet encapsulates the pinnacle of this inner olfactory power: "Bo konam dānam ze har peyrāhanī / Gar bovad Yūsuf o gar āhrimanī." This is not an intellectual or inferential cognition, but a direct, experiential discovery. Just as Jacob, by smelling Joseph's shirt, sensed his presence and regained his lost sight, this 'smelling' signifies perceiving truth with the eye of the heart. The metaphor is striking: Joseph's shirt not only promises reunion but is itself a source of healing and spiritual vision.
Majnūn, too, exemplifies this through his ability to smell the earth and locate Layla’s grave. This demonstrates that love is a potent instrument for this kind of direct perception. Amidst countless particles of dust, Majnūn unerringly finds Layla's scent, and it is there that he surrenders his soul. This is not just a romantic tale, but a symbol of love's power in immediate, unmediated recognition of the Beloved – a recognition that transcends outward signs and springs from the very depths of the soul.
A crucial point lies in the juxtaposition of 'Joseph' and 'Ahriman'. This power of inner scent is not solely for discerning goodness and truth; it also possesses the ability to recognize evil and deceit. The ʻārif not only identifies the scent of Joseph (the Beloved, truth, purity) from a thousand miles but can also detect the scent of Ahriman (deceit, falsehood, evil) in any guise or manifestation. This is a comprehensive diagnostic tool that immunizes the ʻārif from all forms of illusion, misjudgment, and trickery.
This insight brings to mind the famous saying, Al-Nās maʻādin ka-maʻādin al-dhahab wa al-fiḍḍah ('People are like mines, like mines of gold and silver'). Although the authenticity of this hadith is debated, its core concept – that humans are like mines with inner essences of gold, silver, or copper – resonates with Mawlana's bū-bīnī skill. The thief states that from the khāk-e tan (the outward form and body of humans), he can discern the ganj-e rūḥ (the inner treasure of the soul) – how much naqd (essence, pure substance) is hidden within their existential 'mine.' This is precisely the 'self-knowledge' that Mawlana, elsewhere, calls the 'root of the root of the root of religion.' This perception frees one from reliance on appearances and leads to the core of existence.
I recall Mawlana himself stating at the beginning of the Masnavi, "Īn nafas-e jān dāmanam bartāfte ast / Būy-e peyrāhan-e Yūsuf yāfte ast" (This very breath of my soul has lifted my skirt, for it has found the scent of Joseph's shirt). He places himself in the position of Jacob, having perceived the scent of Joseph (Shams). This couplet, therefore, does not merely describe a thief's skill but articulates a fundamental mystical principle in Mawlana's worldview: the direct perception of truth through the heart and inner intuition, distinguishing it from all falsehood and evil. The Prophet Muhammad also famously said, "I perceive the scent of God from Yemen," referring to Uways al-Qarani, who, through the scent of his faith and love, reached the Prophet. This 'Yamani wisdom' – which some, like Mir Damad, contrasted with Greek wisdom – is precisely the intuitive wisdom that arises not from argumentation but from 'smelling' the truth. This scent is the scent of loyalty, the scent of sweetness, and the scent of truth, arising from the formless meanings and manifesting in the forms of words.
Key takeaways
- Inner scent (spiritual intuition) is a gnostic power to discern truth from falsehood, transcending intellectual understanding.
- The tales of Joseph and Jacob, and Majnūn and Layla, symbolize love's power in infallible, unmediated recognition of the Beloved.
- ʻIrfān (gnosis) or 'secret-knowing' signifies 'smelling' and comprehending hidden truths, rather than merely theoretical knowledge.
- This discerning power recognizes not only goodness (Joseph) but also evil (Ahriman) in any form or guise.
- From the 'dust of the body' one can reach the 'treasure of the soul'; the inner essence of humans is discoverable from their outward form.
- This 'Yamani wisdom' (intuitive wisdom) differs from Greek rational wisdom, being founded on heartfelt perception.
