Adam's single act of disobedience, though seemingly small, was catastrophic because it directly obscured his spiritual vision.
This couplet explains the gravity of Adam's fall from grace. Rumi uses a powerful and precise metaphor: a single hair. In the grand scheme of things, a hair is tiny and insignificant. Adam's sin—eating the forbidden fruit—might also seem like a small transgression.
However, Rumi immediately reframes the issue by changing the location of the hair. A hair on your arm is nothing, but a hair that has grown inside your eye is an immense and painful obstruction. It blocks all vision. The following line (M2:18) makes this explicit: "Adam was the eye of the ancient light; a hair in the eye is a mighty mountain."
The point is not the objective size of the sin, but its relationship to the sinner. For a being of pure spiritual perception like Adam, whose very essence was to be the "eye" through which God's light saw the world, even the slightest deviation was a total eclipse. The sin wasn't an external act but an internal clouding of his essential nature, blinding him to the divine presence he once knew.

مولانا در اینجا برای توضیح پیامدهای خطای حضرت آدم از یک تمثیل بسیار دقیق و زیبا استفاده میکند. گناه آدم، یعنی خوردن از میوهی ممنوعه، شاید در مقیاس انسانی عملی کوچک به نظر برسد؛ به اندازهی یک تار مو. اما اهمیت و تأثیر هر عملی به جایگاه فاعل آن بستگی دارد.
نکتهی اصلی اینجاست که این «موی گناه» در کجا روییده بود: «در دو دیده». یک تار مو اگر روی دست یا بازو باشد، شاید اصلاً به چشم نیاید و اهمیتی نداشته باشد. اما همان تار موی ناچیز، اگر در چشم انسان برود، تمام دنیا را تیره و تار میکند، بینایی را مختل میسازد و دردی عظیم ایجاد میکند. آدم (ع) «دیدهی نور قدیم» بود؛ یعنی چشم او به نور ازلی خداوند باز بود و از مقربان درگاه حق به شمار میرفت. برای چنین دیدهی حساسی، کوچکترین مانع، حکم کوهی بزرگ را دارد و حجابی عظیم میان او و آن نور مطلق میشود.
بنابراین، مولانا تأکید میکند که بزرگی یا کوچکی گناه امری نسبی است. برای اولیای خدا و کسانی که در بالاترین مرتبهی قرب قرار دارند، کوچکترین غفلت یا لغزش، پیامدهای بسیار سنگینی دارد، زیرا شفافیت و حساسیت «چشم» معنوی آنها را خدشهدار میکند. این بیت در واقع مقدمهای است برای بیت بعدی که میگوید: «بود آدم دیدهی نور قدیم / موی در دیده بود کوه عظیم».
