Because Rumi's patron and muse, Husam al-Din, was absorbed in a profound spiritual state, the inspiration for the Masnavi's poetry (the 'flowerbuds') could not emerge.
This couplet is part of Rumi's explanation for the two-year gap between Book 1 and Book 2 of the Masnavi. The previous verse (M2:3) identifies Husam al-Din as the one who had turned his reins away toward the “peak of heaven.” This verse deepens the metaphor.

مصراع اول: «چون به معراج حقایق رفته بود» مولانا حال حسامالدین را به یک «معراج» تشبیه میکند. این معراج نه یک سفر فیزیکی به آسمانها، بلکه یک صعود و سفر درونی عمیق برای کشف حقایق معنوی است. حسامالدین در یک تجربۀ عرفانی شدید و حال استغراق (جذب کامل در عالم معنا) فرو رفته بود و از امور بیرونی، از جمله پیگیری سرایش مثنوی، فاصله گرفته بود.
مصراع دوم: «بیبهارش غنچهها ناکَفته بود» اینجا استعارهای زیبا به کار رفته است. حسامالدین به «بهار» تشبیه شده است که حضورش باعث شکوفایی و طراوت میشود. «غنچهها» نیز استعاره از ابیات و داستانهای مثنوی است که در ذهن و جان مولانا آمادهٔ شکفتن بودند. همانطور که غنچهها بدون آمدن بهار نمیشکفند، طبع شعر مولانا نیز بدون حضور الهامبخش و توجه حسامالدین، خاموش و بیثمر مانده بود. این بیت نشاندهندۀ پیوند عمیق و ناگسستنی میان این دو و نقش حیاتی «مخاطبِ همدل» در فرایند آفرینش هنری است.
