M2:100 — آینهٔ کلی ترا دیدم ابد / دیدم اندر چشم تو من نقش خود

This couplet is the climax of a spiritual seeker's quest. Having searched in vain for their true identity (naqsh-e jān), they realize that an ordinary mirror only reflects the physical form. The true mirror for the soul, Rumi states, is the face of a perfected human being—the Friend or spiritual guide who comes from "that land" of spiritual reality.

Here, the seeker has found such a person. Gazing at them, they see not just another individual, but the Āyina-ye Kullī, the Universal Mirror. This is a technical term for the Perfect Human (insān al-kāmil), who, by being completely polished and free of self, perfectly reflects the divine attributes. In looking into the eyes of this perfected guide, the seeker doesn't see the guide's ego; they see their own essential self, their true spiritual form, reflected back at them for the first time. This is the moment of recognition, the discovery that self-knowledge is found not in isolation but through the clear, selfless gaze of the Beloved.
