M2:154 — گر گلی گیرد به کف خاری شود / ور سوی یاری رود ماری شود
M2:154
Betekenis · به زبانِ تو — Je eigen taal · AI
Due to his corrupt inner nature, this man transforms everything good he encounters into something harmful and poisonous.
This couplet describes the spiritual state of Jesus's foolish companion, who demands the power to resurrect the dead without having purified his own soul. God explains to Jesus that this man's essence is one of idbār (aversion, spiritual decline). His nature is like a reverse alchemy: instead of turning base metals into gold, he turns gold into base metals.
The imagery is stark and direct. A rose, a symbol of beauty and divine love, turns into a thorn in his hand, something that wounds. A friend (yār), a source of companionship and spiritual aid, is met not with friendship but with the man himself becoming a snake (mār), a creature of poison and treachery. Rumi is illustrating a core principle: one's inner state determines the outcome of one's actions and perceptions. For the spiritually corrupt, even the most beautiful and beneficial things become instruments of harm, both to themselves and to others.
- یاری
- A friend, beloved, or helper. In Sufi contexts, it often refers to a spiritual guide or a companion on the path, a source of support and love.
- کف
- Literally 'palm' or 'hand'. The phrase 'به کف گیرد' means 'to take into one's hand' or 'to grasp'.
