The vizier, an unbeliever at heart, has put on the disguise of a religious guide, but his spiritual 'progress' is just a deceptive game played within the confines of his own trickery.
This couplet captures the essence of the vizier's hypocrisy. He presents himself as a nāṣiḥ-i dīn, a sincere spiritual advisor, to the Christians he secretly intends to destroy. Rumi contrasts this pious exterior with his inner reality: he is a kāfir, an infidel not in a sectarian sense, but in the sense of one who actively conceals Truth.
The second line uses a brilliant and unusual metaphor: his journey (sayr) is not on the path to God, but dar gōzīna, 'inside a walnut pastry'. A gōzīna is a sweet, tempting confection. The image suggests that the vizier's entire elaborate scheme—his feigned piety, his self-mutilation, his leadership—is a self-contained world of deceit. He isn't actually traveling anywhere spiritually; he is merely moving around within the sticky, sweet, and ultimately petty confines of his own makr (cunning). His 'path' is an illusion, a confection he has baked for others to consume to their doom.
- Nāṣiḥ-i dīn: Literally, 'advisor of religion'. A spiritual counselor, a sincere guide on the religious path. Its use here is deeply ironic.
- Kāfir: An unbeliever, an infidel. In Sufi contexts, it often means one who 'covers' or conceals the truth of God's unity, rather than simply a non-Muslim.
- Makr: Cunning, deceit, trickery, plotting. A key term in the story, describing the vizier's entire strategy.
- Gōzīna: A type of sweet pastry or confection made with walnuts. Rumi uses it metaphorically for the vizier's self-contained, deceptively appealing scheme.
- Sayr: A journey, travel. In a Sufi context, it specifically refers to the spiritual journey or progress along the path toward God.
