Translation & meaning
Translation: When he comes, he is a skillful physician; / Know him as truthful, for he is trustworthy and sincere. Meaning: This verse describes the attributes of the divine physician, promised to the king in his dream, portraying him as a wise, adept, trustworthy, and sincere healer.
Explanation
This verse, nested within the tale of the king and the maid's illness, offers a description of the divine physician whose advent is prophesied to the king in a dream. Rumi here speaks not merely of a corporeal physician, but of a healer of the soul and spirit, one who remedies the hidden ailments of existence.
I have previously discussed the 'philosophy of suffering' in the Masnavi. Pains, afflictions, deprivations, and failures sometimes act as a jolt, awakening man from heedlessness and turning his attention towards the truth of being and his Creator. The king in the story, in the depths of despair and helplessness from earthly doctors, seeks refuge at the divine threshold. It is then that God, through a dream, heralds the arrival of this adept and divine healer. Thus, the physician's coming is itself the fruit of that suffering and supplication to the divine presence.
Rumi's emphasis on the 'skillful' (حاذق) nature of this physician points to his unparalleled mastery in healing; however, this skill is not merely in conventional medical matters. In the subsequent verse, Rumi describes this physician thus: 'In his cure, behold absolute magic; / In his temperament, behold God's power.' This signifies that his abilities transcend human measures, and in his constitution and existential structure, a divine power resonates. 'Absolute magic' (سحر مطلق) here refers not to sorcery, but to the astonishing and transcendent effects manifested in his healing. Therefore, his physical constitution and spiritual power are extraordinary.
Furthermore, the quality of being 'trustworthy and sincere' (امین و صادق) complements his adeptness. This physician is not only knowledgeable and capable but also truthful and reliable in his words and actions. He is one who can be relied upon, for he guides with sincerity and integrity on the path to healing the soul and spirit. These attributes underscore his spiritual credibility and acceptance among the king and spiritual seekers.
Finally, Rumi, later in the same narrative, cryptically and meaningfully describes the manner of this physician's appearance: 'He was approaching from afar like a crescent moon; / He was non-existent, and non-existent, and existent in the form of an illusion.' This physician possesses a presence that fluctuates between being and non-being, much like the slender crescent moon poised at the threshold of visibility and invisibility. This idiom emphasizes the immaterial and spiritual nature of his existence; he is not a purely material being readily accessible to the five senses, but rather a manifestation of an unseen, divine presence that comes to aid the seeker and the suffering. Thus, this physician is more spiritual than corporeal, and his arrival signifies the unraveling of inner knots and the attainment of union with the Divine.
Key takeaways
- Illnesses and sufferings, when viewed with spiritual insight, can pave the way for divine tidings and encounters with the physician of the soul.
- The divine physician appearing in this story is not merely a physical healer but a spiritual sage endowed with powers beyond human comprehension.
- Trustworthiness and sincerity (being amīn and sādiq) are fundamental traits of any spiritual guide or healer, emphasized by Rumi.
- The physician's ambiguous appearance, fluctuating between being and non-being (like a crescent moon), signifies the immaterial and sacred nature of his presence.

- کو
- امین
This verse describes the divine physician promised to the king in a dream, portraying him as an exceptionally skilled, trustworthy, and sincere healer.
This couplet, from the story of the king and the ailing handmaiden, describes the divine healer whose arrival is foretold in the king's dream. Rumi is not speaking of an ordinary doctor, but of a physician of the soul who can cure the hidden ailments of existence.
The king's suffering and desperation, after all worldly physicians have failed, lead him to turn to God in prayer. The dream is God's response, and the physician's arrival is the fruit of this sincere supplication. Rumi's emphasis on the physician being ḥādhiq (حاذق), or 'skillful,' points to an unparalleled mastery that, as the next verse reveals, transcends human ability and is rooted in divine power.
Equally important are the qualities of being amīn (امین, 'trustworthy') and ṣādiq (صادق, 'sincere'). These complement his skill, establishing him as a spiritual guide who can be relied upon completely. He is not just capable, but also truthful and faithful in his words and actions, which is the foundation of his spiritual authority. This physician is ultimately more of a spiritual presence than a physical one—a manifestation of the divine that comes to aid the suffering soul and untangle its deepest knots.
- (He) is skillful/adept. An Arabic loanword, *ḥādhiq*, emphasizing great expertise and mastery, particularly in a craft like medicine.
- Know him (to be) sincere/truthful. A command form, instructing the king on how to perceive and receive this divine messenger.
- امین
- Trustworthy, faithful, reliable. An Arabic loanword (*amīn*) with deep ethical and spiritual connotations, implying someone entrusted with a divine or sacred charge.
- Sincere, truthful, veracious. An Arabic loanword (*ṣādiq*) referring to one whose inner state and outer expression are in perfect alignment; a key virtue in Sufism.
