Translation & meaning
Translation: The worldly sense is the ladder of this world; / The religious sense is the ladder of heaven. Meaning: Rumi distinguishes between two modes of perception: the outward senses, which serve to navigate the material world, and an inner, spiritual sense that provides a means of ascent to the celestial realms.
Explanation
Following his discussion of the 'touchstone' (محک) of the soul, which discerns certainty from doubt, Rumi now elucidates the primary tools of this discernment: the human senses. He begins with a relatable analogy: just as a living sense in the mouth can detect a tiny splinter in a thousand bites, refusing peace until it's removed, so too an inner sense can distinguish truth from falsehood. This discernment is the fruit of a vibrant, active perception; a dead sense cannot make such distinctions.
Thus, Rumi introduces two kinds of 'sense' or perception: ḥiss-i dunyā (worldly sense) and ḥiss-i dīnī (religious sense). The worldly sense refers to our outward faculties that differentiate bitter from sweet, or a thorny morsel from a smooth one. This sense serves as a ladder for ascending in the material world, a tool for acquiring worldly skills in carpentry, medicine, cooking, and other crafts. The health and efficacy of this sense are ensured by maʿmūrī-yi tan (the prosperity/health of the body); if there's a defect, one must consult a worldly ṭabīb (physician).
In contrast, the religious sense, which is the ladder to heaven, belongs to an entirely different realm. This is the inner insight, or more accurately, the moral and spiritual conscience that distinguishes truth from falsehood, and certainty from doubt. The health and awakening of this sense arise not from physical prosperity, but from wīrānī-yi badan (the 'ruin' or desolation of the body). Here, 'ruin of the body' signifies the curbing of carnal desires and physical excesses – what mystics call riyāḍat (asceticism). Rumi explicitly states: "The health of that sense comes from the desolation of the body." He warns that if we are preoccupied solely with our appetites and bodily pleasures, our inner eye will not become discerning. He evokes the imagery of Ramadan and fasting: "How much fatty and sweet food have you consumed? / Try fasting for a few days!" If "you empty this sack [of the belly] of bread," then "you will fill it with splendid jewels"; meaning your soul will be filled with divine knowledge.
This teaching is deeply rooted in the mystical tradition, as Saʿdi articulated: "Keep the inside empty of food / So that you may see the light of gnosis within it." And Imam Ali (peace be upon him) in Nahj al-Balaghah said: "Gluttony removes sagacity." However, Rumi is careful to emphasize that this 'ruin' should not lead to extremist Sufi practices that impair intellect, as Ghazali also insisted that a saint's intellect must remain intact. The intent of 'ruin' is the abandonment of habit and the curbing of excess, not the destruction of body or mind. Jami, in his Nafaḥāt al-Uns, recounts Rumi's dying advice: "ʿalaykum bi-qillat ṭaʿām wa qillat manām wa qillat kalām" (Eat little, sleep little, speak little), which were fundamental tenets of the Path (ṭarīqat).
This distinction also clarifies the difference between Sharia and Tariqat. In Sharia, many actions are permissible, even overeating or excessive sleep, as long as they don't harm the body. The jurist (faqīh) judges only external acts, not the inner presence in prayer or the spiritual effect of fasting. Tariqat, however, is a step beyond Sharia, where every action gains inner meaning and depth. In this realm, actions permissible by Sharia may be deemed improper for the seeker, as they hinder inner purity. Hafez similarly states: "I am a servant of the Pīr-i Mughān, do not be offended, O Sheikh / For you made the promise, but he fulfilled it." The Sheikh (symbol of Sharia) promises future spiritual credit (nasī'a), but the Pīr-i Mughān (symbol of Tariqat) delivers the spiritual reward in immediate 'cash' (naqd) in this world.
Rumi further explains that this 'ruin of the body' or 'demolition of the house' is for the purpose of acquiring a treasure, after which "from that very treasure, he will rebuild it more splendidly." Like one who demolishes a house to find a treasure and then uses that treasure to build an even better house; or a surgeon who cuts the skin to extract an arrow, after which new skin grows; or a conqueror who takes a ruined fortress from the enemy and then builds a hundred towers and dams upon it. The message is clear: this path of Tariqat ensures that "you will not incur loss." This is a teaching for seekers on the path who, through their spiritual endeavors, attain results and peace of mind even in this world, without suffering loss. This differs from the path of ʿāshiqī (passionate love), a higher station, where the seeker embraces gambling and losing everything, without thought of reward or compensation: "Blessed is the gambler who lost all he had / And had nothing left but the craving for another gamble." This couplet, therefore, articulates the promise and guarantee of the path of Tariqat for those at the beginning of their spiritual journey.
Key takeaways
- Rumi distinguishes between two types of perception: the worldly sense (ḥiss-i dunyā) for material affairs and the religious sense (ḥiss-i dīnī) for spiritual ascent.
- The health of the outward senses depends on the well-being of the body (maʿmūrī-yi tan); but the health of the inner, religious sense stems from curbing bodily desires (wīrānī-yi badan).
- ‘Ruin of the body’ refers to ascetic practices like reduced eating, sleeping, and speaking, not literal destruction of the body or intellect.
- This spiritual discipline is not a loss; it leads to the discovery of an inner ‘treasure’ and a more profound flourishing of both soul and (eventually rebuilt) body.
- Unlike the path of Sharia, which promises deferred rewards, the path of Tariqat delivers immediate spiritual fulfillment and 'cash' (naqd) to the seeker in this world.
- This couplet serves as Rumi's clear promise to those on the path of Tariqat: their spiritual endeavors will not be in vain or lead to loss.

Rumi distinguishes between two modes of perception: the outward senses, which are a ladder for navigating the material world, and an inner, spiritual sense, which is a ladder for ascending to celestial realms.
Following his discussion of the soul's 'touchstone' for telling certainty from doubt, Rumi identifies the faculties involved: the human senses. He introduces a core distinction between two kinds of perception: the 'worldly sense' (ḥiss-i dunyā) and the 'spiritual sense' (ḥiss-i dīnī).
The worldly sense comprises our five external faculties, which allow us to navigate and succeed in the material realm. This sense is a ladder for worldly achievement—mastering crafts, practicing medicine, or cooking. Its health depends on the prosperity of the body (maʿmūrī-yi tan), and for its ailments, one consults a physician.
In contrast, the spiritual sense is the ladder to heaven. It is our inner insight or spiritual conscience, the faculty that truly distinguishes truth from falsehood. Crucially, its health arises not from the body's prosperity but from its 'ruin' (wīrānī-yi badan). This 'ruin' does not mean self-destruction but rather the disciplined curbing of carnal desires and physical excesses—the asceticism (riyāḍat) of eating, sleeping, and speaking little. This discipline, Rumi argues, empties the soul of worldly distractions, allowing it to be filled with the 'splendid jewels' of divine knowledge.
This 'ruin' is not a net loss but a necessary demolition to uncover a greater treasure. Rumi compares it to tearing down a house to find buried gold, then using that gold to build a far more magnificent home. It is a foundational practice on the Sufi path (ṭarīqat), which, unlike the deferred promises of formal religion (sharīʿat), offers immediate spiritual reward. The beyt thus serves as a promise to the seeker: the path of spiritual discipline is not one of ultimate loss, but of profound and immediate gain.

Ia memperkenalkan dua jenis indra: "indra duniawi" (ḥiss-i dunyā) dan "indra ruhani" (ḥiss-i dīnī).
