Translation & meaning
Translation: You are the Master of the people; whoever does not desire [your mastership] Has truly perished, absolutely, if he does not cease [his denial]. Meaning: This verse, spoken by the king to the divine physician, underscores the lofty station of the spiritual leader and the dire consequences of rejecting such spiritual authority.
Explanation
This verse appears in the sequence where the king, having finally found the divine physician, extols him with fervent admiration. At this juncture of the narrative, Rumi's primary intention is not to introduce a profoundly complex philosophical point, but rather to depict the encounter between an eager host and a divine guest. The king, after years of waiting and experiencing utter helplessness, perceives the physician as a divine gift and hails him as the 'Master of the people.'
I read 'Master' (Mawlā) here not merely as a worldly sovereign or owner, but as an embodiment of spiritual guardianship and authority. The divine physician in this tale symbolizes the perfect guide or the divine human being who discerns the right path from the wrong, and who comes to the aid of those who have fallen. The king, with his decisive words, establishes the physician's position as a spiritual exemplar, viewing him not as an ordinary sage but as someone in the station of Mujtabā (the Chosen) and Murtadā (the Approved), whose guidance is unparalleled.
"Whoever does not desire [your mastership]" refers to one who is unwilling to accept this spiritual authority and guidance—one who refuses to submit to this spiritual leadership. Such a person, from Rumi's perspective, has undoubtedly 'perished.' This perdition, I believe, is more spiritual than physical; it is a spiritual ruin stemming from the denial of truth and the rejection of divine guidance. To emphasize this consequence, Rumi employs the phrase "absolutely, if he does not cease," which is drawn from a Quranic verse, thus adding immense weight to the king's pronouncement. In other words, the king utters this statement as an intuitive gnosis, a truth rooted in his own profound experience and divinely inspired.
This verse, in essence, is a straightforward articulation of a fundamental mystical principle: the acceptance of divine guardianship and submitting to the guidance of a divine helper is the primary condition for liberation from error and for progressing towards union with the Beloved. Indifference or outright rejection of such guidance leads to spiritual destruction and failure to reach one's ultimate goal. This is a cardinal rule in mystical endeavor, expressed in this narrative through the simple, yet resolute, words of an ardent king. The divine physician has arrived to cure the handmaiden, but first, the king must acknowledge and affirm his spiritual stature. These verses express this affirmation—an affirmation that will serve as the key to unlocking the subsequent complexities of the story.
Key takeaways
- Spiritual guides, like the divine physician, are the key to resolving existential knots.
- Acceptance of spiritual authority and guidance is the prerequisite for unlocking inner obstacles and reaching one's destination.
- Disregard for divine guidance leads to spiritual perdition, not merely worldly harm.
- Even when narrating kings' affairs, Rumi delves into the spiritual roots of events, seeking solutions in the healing of the soul.
- The use of a Quranic phrase in the king's speech elevates the authority and certainty of his words, transcending the mere pronouncements of a ruler.

- (Arabo: radā) 'È perito, è andato in rovina'. Indica una distruzione o perdizione, qui intesa principalmente in senso spirituale.
- (Arabe) « Mais non ! S'il ne cesse pas... ».
Sebuah pengakuan atas otoritas spiritual.
- (Bahasa Arab: radā) Binasa, celaka, hancur. Merujuk pada kebinasaan spiritual.
- (Bahasa Arab: kallā la'in lam yantahi) "Demi Tuhan/Sekali-kali tidak, jika ia tidak berhenti." Sebuah kutipan dari Al-Qur'an (QS.
[o ¡Ciertamente!] Si no cesa...».
You are the spiritual guide for humanity, and anyone who rejects your authority and guidance is spiritually doomed if they persist in their denial.
This couplet is spoken by the king to the divine physician he has finally found. At this point in the story, the king is not making a complex theological argument but is expressing his overwhelming relief and reverence. By calling the physician the Mawlā (Master) of the people, he is affirming the man's spiritual authority, not just his worldly skill. The physician symbolizes the perfect spiritual guide (murshid) who can lead the lost out of their predicaments.
The king's declaration establishes a core principle of the Sufi path: accepting the guidance of a divinely-sent master is the prerequisite for spiritual healing and progress. To reject such a guide—'whoever does not desire this'—is to choose spiritual ruin. Rumi emphasizes the gravity of this rejection by having the king state that such a person has already 'perished.' This is not a physical death but a spiritual one, a state of being cut off from truth and divine grace.
To underscore the certainty of this spiritual law, Rumi borrows a phrase from the Qur'an, kallā laʾin lam yantahi ('absolutely, if he does not cease'). This gives the king's words the weight of divine revelation, suggesting his insight comes from a place of deep, intuitive knowing (maʿrifat) born from his suffering. The verse is a powerful affirmation that before any external problem can be solved, one must first recognize and submit to the spiritual authority that holds the key to the cure.
- (Arabic) 'You are the Master of the people.' *Mawlā* is a rich term meaning master, lord, protector, or spiritual guide. Here, it signifies spiritual authority and guardianship.
- (Arabic) 'he does not desire/wish for.' In context, it refers to one who does not want or accept the spiritual mastership being offered.
- (Arabic) 'he has perished/been destroyed.' The verb *radā* implies ruin or perdition, which Rumi intends here in a spiritual sense.
- (Arabic) 'Absolutely, if he does not cease/desist.' This is a direct quotation from the Qur'an (96:15), used to add emphasis and divine authority to the king's warning.
- (Arabisch: yashtahī) Er begehrt, er wünscht. Hier bedeutet „man lā yashtahī“: „wer nicht begehrt“.
