M1:1091 — بر سر دریا همی راند او عمد / می‌نمودش آن قدر بیرون ز حد

This couplet continues the story of the fly, a symbol of those who hold shallow or false interpretations (تأویل باطل). The fly has landed on a piece of straw floating in a puddle of donkey urine. In its delusion, it imagines this puddle to be a vast ocean and the straw its grand ship. The phrase "drove with intent" (همی راند او عمد) highlights its earnest, yet misguided, effort. For the fly, this tiny, foul-smelling puddle is an immense sea, and its limited perception makes it seem "beyond all limit" (بیرون ز حد). Rumi uses this vivid, slightly absurd image to critique those who, with a narrow perspective, take their small, often impure, understanding of reality for the whole truth, mistaking a drop for an ocean.
