M4:47 — چون بدان آسیب در جست آمدند / پیش پاشان می‌نهد هر روز بند

This couplet generalizes the experience of the lover in the story. Rumi is moving from the specific narrative to a universal principle of the spiritual path. The preceding line (M4:46) states that God gives every seeker an initial, intoxicating taste of their goal—like a first, accidental glimpse of the Beloved—which is enough to ignite their passion and set them in motion.

This beyt, M4:47, describes the second stage. Once the seeker is committed to the quest (dar just āmadand), God does not make the path easy. On the contrary, He intentionally places a band—a fetter, an obstacle, a trial—in their way every day. This is not a punishment, but a necessary part of the training. The initial grace makes one a lover; the subsequent trials make one a worthy one. These hardships are designed to purify the seeker's intention, deepen their longing, and prove that their desire is not a fleeting whim but a profound commitment.
