The merchant prepared for a business trip and set out on his way to India, the native land of his caged parrot.
This couplet is the narrative starting point for the famous parable of the Merchant and the Parrot. Rumi uses simple, direct language to set the scene: a journey is about to begin. The destination, Hindustan (India), is not arbitrary; it is the parrot's homeland, a place of freedom and natural belonging that stands in stark contrast to its life in a cage.
The merchant's journey creates the central tension of the story. He is a man of the world, moving freely for commerce, while his parrot is a captive soul, physically confined but spiritually connected to its origin. This journey becomes the catalyst that allows the parrot to send a message from its world of captivity to the world of freedom, setting in motion the story's profound lesson about spiritual liberation.
- Literally 'to make an instrument/arrangement.' In this context, it means 'to prepare for,' 'to make ready,' or 'to arrange.' It implies a deliberate and complete preparation for the journey.
- Hindustan, the classical Persian name for India. In the context of the Masnavi, India often symbolizes the primordial, spiritual homeland—the source from which the soul (represented by the parrot) originates and to which it longs to return.
