Translation & meaning
Translation: In prayer and fasting, in Hajj and zakat, Believers and hypocrites are in the game of win and lose. Meaning: This verse highlights that outward acts of worship might appear identical for both the faithful and the hypocritical, yet their inner intentions and ultimate spiritual destinies are profoundly divergent.
Explanation
In this verse, Rumi unveils a fundamental truth woven into the fabric of existence: the distinction between appearance (form) and inner reality (essence). This is the very fallacy that leads many astray, the assumption that identical forms must entail identical essences. In prayer, fasting, Hajj, and zakat, the believer and the hypocrite seem to inhabit the same field, performing outwardly similar actions. Yet, this superficial resemblance in no way implies an inner congruence. Both move the chess pieces, but one is destined for a 'win' (burd), while the other's end is 'checkmate' (māt).
This difference, in essence, stems from the existential 'factory' of each individual. Rumi illuminates this with vivid analogies: two bees feed from the same flower, one yields a sting, the other honey; two deer drink from the same water source, one produces dung, the other pure musk; two reeds absorb the same water, one remains hollow, the other becomes sweet with sugar. The raw input may be identical, but the inherent nature and disposition (ṭabʿ) of the recipient produce vastly different outcomes. Here we see: "This one consumes, giving rise to envy and greed; that one consumes, giving rise to naught but Divine love." The sustenance an individual receives, depending on their inner state, either reinforces vices or nurtures love and gnosis. The Quran itself states that its verses are healing and mercy for believers, but only increase the loss of the unjust; the same text, in different dispositions, yields opposite effects.
Rumi's "hypocrite" here is one who performs acts of worship not out of genuine "need" (niyāz) and inner longing, but for "ostentation" (istiʿẓāʾ) and show. Their inner being is crooked, and this crookedness casts a shadow over their actions. This phenomenon can be termed 'monkey-like imitation' (būzīna-ṭabʿī): a blind imitation of external forms without grasping the essence and spirit of the act. Disbelievers and hypocrites, even in their disputes and contentions, are like mimicking apes; they outwardly engage in actions resembling those of prophets, but remain ignorant of the spirit and purpose behind the act. "This one acts by command, that one for strife"; one acts with pure divine intention, the other rises in contention and opposition.
Intention and inner reality are what imbue an action with value. Just as "Ahmad and Abu Jahl went to the idol-temple," their intentions and essences forged divergent paths and destinations. One drew closer to Truth, the other further away. This distinction between form and essence permeates not only acts of worship but all spheres of human life. Ultimately, each individual walks and fulfills their destiny according to their inner disposition and 'name'—their true essence and intention—one heading toward reunion, the other toward distance and loss.
Key takeaways
- Outward acts of worship, like prayer and Hajj, may appear identical for believers and hypocrites, but their intentions and ultimate destinies are fundamentally different.
- The distinction lies not in the act itself, but in the individual's 'existential factory' or inner disposition (ṭabʿ), which transforms identical inputs into divergent outputs.
- The hypocrite's motivation for worship is istiʿẓāʾ (ostentation/show), contrasting sharply with the believer's genuine niyāz (spiritual need/sincerity).
- Rumi labels this blind imitation of external forms without grasping the essence as 'monkey-like' (būzīna-ṭabʿī).
- Just as food or Quranic verses yield different results in different temperaments, the same action can produce entirely contradictory outcomes based on inner state.
- Each individual's ultimate fate, be it 'win' (burd) or 'checkmate' (māt), is a consequence of their intention and inner reality, not merely the outward appearance of their actions.

The outward acts of worship performed by the faithful and the hypocritical may look identical, but they are engaged in a contest where their inner intentions will lead to entirely different outcomes.
In this couplet, Rumi highlights a central theme: the critical difference between outer form and inner reality. He uses the metaphor of a chess game (burd u māt, literally 'win and checkmate') to describe the spiritual landscape. On the surface, in the performance of religious duties like prayer, fasting, pilgrimage (Hajj), and charity (zakāt), the believer (muʾmin) and the hypocrite (munāfiq) appear to be making the same moves. They stand in the same prayer line, fast on the same days, and perform the same rituals.
However, this external similarity masks a profound internal divergence. The hypocrite's actions, as Rumi explains in the preceding verses, are a form of soulless, competitive imitation—what he terms 'monkey-like' (būzīna-ṭabʿī). They act not from genuine spiritual need (niyāz) but for show and contention (istīza). The believer, in contrast, acts from a sincere divine command and inner devotion. Rumi argues that it is this inner disposition, the 'existential factory' of a person, that determines the true value and outcome of any act. Just as the same flower can yield honey for one bee and a sting for another, the same religious act will lead one person toward a spiritual 'win' and the other toward an ultimate 'checkmate' or loss.
The verse serves as a powerful reminder that in the spiritual path, intention is paramount. God does not judge by appearances but by the state of the heart. The game board may look the same for both players, but their ultimate destinies are determined by the inner reality that drives their actions, leading one to salvation and the other to ruin.

- Orang munafik.
- Orang-orang beriman.
