Moses protests to God, predicting that if this man gets what he wants, he will suffer such catastrophic regret that he will tear his clothes and bite his hands in despair.
This couplet is Moses’s final, desperate plea to God, arguing against granting a man’s wish to understand the language of animals. Having been commanded by God to teach the man, Moses paints a vivid picture of the inevitable outcome.
