To truly appreciate the sweetness and beauty of the Beloved, you must stop looking with your own limited, critical eyes and instead see through the eyes of those who are already deeply in love.
This couplet serves as a crucial piece of spiritual advice, shifting from a general philosophical point to a practical instruction for the seeker. The preceding verses establish that everything's value is relative; what is poison to one is honey to another. Rumi now applies this principle to the perception of spiritual beauty, whether that of God, a prophet, or a spiritual guide.
He argues that our ordinary perception is conditioned by our own ego, habits, and doubts, which can prevent us from seeing the true, 'sugary' sweetness of the divine reality. To overcome this, Rumi proposes a radical act of empathy and borrowing: look through the eyes of the ʿushshāq (the ardent lovers). Their vision is not clouded by the same skepticism; it is a vision transformed by love, capable of seeing the Beloved as the source of all beauty and goodness.
This is a call to temporarily suspend one's own judgment and adopt the perspective of profound love and devotion. By 'borrowing' the eyes of a true lover, the seeker can bypass their own spiritual blockages and get a direct glimpse of the beauty they are otherwise missing, transforming their own perception in the process.
- شکر
- Literally 'sugar.' In Sufi poetry, it is a common metaphor for spiritual sweetness, divine grace, delightful speech, or the intoxicating beauty of the Beloved.
- ورا
- A poetic contraction of 'او را' (ū-rā), meaning 'him,' 'her,' or 'it' (as the object of the verb). Here it refers to the object of perception—the Beloved or spiritual reality being discussed.
- عشاقش
- A compound of 'عشاق' (ʿushshāq), the Arabic plural of 'ʿāshiq' (lover), and the Persian possessive suffix '-ash' (his/her/its). It means 'his/her/its lovers.'
- نگر
- The imperative form of the verb 'نگریستن' (negaristan), meaning 'to look,' 'to behold,' or 'to gaze upon.' It implies a deep, contemplative looking, not a casual glance.
