Anything you find hateful becomes a beloved friend if it ends up leading you to your ultimate goal, the Beloved.
This couplet concludes a short passage on how perception is transformed by love and divine guidance. The immediate context is a story about a lover who, while fleeing a terrifying night watchman, stumbles into the very garden where his beloved awaits. The watchman, an object of terror (makrūh), becomes the very means (dalīl) to union. The lover, in his joy, now sees the watchman as a dear friend.
Rumi universalizes this principle. He argues that our judgments of 'good' and 'bad' are relative and often misguided. What seems like a curse can be a blessing in disguise. The key is the outcome: if a painful or frightening event ultimately brings you closer to the Divine Beloved, its nature is retroactively changed. It is no longer an enemy but a ḥabīb (beloved) and a khalīl (intimate friend), an agent of grace.
- مکروه
- Makrūh: (Arabic loan) Detested, hateful, odious. In Islamic jurisprudence, it refers to an act that is disliked but not strictly forbidden. Here, Rumi uses it in its general sense of something repugnant to the self.
- دلیل
- Dalīl: (Arabic loan) A guide, proof, or indicator. In this context, it means the cause or the means that leads to a specific outcome.
- محبوب
- Maḥbūb: (Arabic loan) The Beloved. A central term in Sufi poetry for God, the ultimate object of love and longing.
- حبیب
- Ḥabīb: (Arabic loan) A beloved, a dear friend. It shares the same root (ḥ-b-b, 'to love') as Maḥbūb.
- خلیل
- Khalīl: (Arabic loan) An intimate, close friend. It is a title of the prophet Abraham (Ibrahim) in the Quran, 'Khalīl Allāh' (the Intimate Friend of God), signifying a very high station of love and proximity.
