Rumi states that he cannot speak the full truth about his spiritual guide, Hosam al-Din, because most people are too spiritually crude and lack the capacity to receive such profound mysteries.
This couplet functions as an apologia, a classical rhetorical device where the poet explains why he cannot do justice to his subject. Rumi has just introduced his beloved disciple, Hosam al-Din, as the inspiration for Book 5. Now, he immediately qualifies the praise he is about to offer.
The obstacle is not his own inability to speak, but the audience's inability to hear. He uses two powerful metaphors for this limitation. First, people are محجوب (veiled) and کثیف (coarse/dense). The veil is a standard Sufi image for the ego and sensory perception, which hide spiritual realities. The coarseness refers to the soul's attachment to the dense, material world, making it unreceptive to subtle truths. Second, their حلقها (throats) are تنگ و ضعیف (narrow and weak). This vivid, physical image suggests that even if a profound truth were offered, the listener could not 'swallow' or assimilate it; it would be like trying to force a large piece of food down a baby's throat (an image Rumi uses explicitly two lines later).
In the context of the Masnavi's opening, this beyt establishes a key principle: spiritual teaching must be tailored to the capacity of the recipient. Rumi is signaling that what he can say in the book is only a fraction of the reality he experiences, a concession to the limitations of his audience.
- Literally 'veiled' or 'screened off.' In Sufi terminology, it refers to a person whose perception of spiritual reality is blocked by the ego, the senses, or attachment to the material world.
- Literally 'dense,' 'thick,' or 'coarse.' Spiritually, it describes the state of being engrossed in the material world, lacking the subtlety and refinement needed to perceive non-physical realities. It is the opposite of 'latif' (subtle, refined).
- Plural of 'halq,' meaning 'throats.' Rumi uses this physical image metaphorically for the capacity of a person's understanding to receive and assimilate spiritual knowledge.
