- Sumergido, ahogado, absorto.
- هش
When the ship of your individual consciousness is completely submerged, the true Sun—the Divine Reality—that governs this physical world becomes manifest.
This couplet is the climax of a series of metaphors about the necessity of total self-annihilation to achieve spiritual union. Rumi has been arguing that one must "die before you die" (mūtū qabla an tamūtū), a famous Prophetic saying that forms the section's title.
The preceding verses use images of incompleteness: a ladder missing the top rungs, a rope too short to reach the water. These represent the spiritual seeker who holds back, who has not yet surrendered the final, most stubborn part of the self—the ego, which Rumi calls the man-i ākhir ("the final 'I'").
This couplet provides the positive outcome of that final surrender. The "ship of awareness" (kashtī-yi hōsh) is the vessel of our ordinary, discursive intellect and individual consciousness. As long as it stays afloat, we perceive the world through its limited frame. To "drown" this ship is to let go of this ego-centric consciousness entirely, to become "submerged" (mustaghraq) in the divine ocean. Only then does the true "Sun of the blue dome" appear. This is not the physical sun, but the Divine Reality that is the true source of all light and existence, which was previously veiled by our own self-awareness.
- Drowned, submerged, sunk. In Sufism, it refers to a state of being completely absorbed or annihilated in the Divine, having lost all sense of separate self.
- هش
- A variant spelling of 'hōsh' (هوش), meaning consciousness, intellect, awareness, or reason. Here it signifies the ordinary, individual consciousness tied to the ego.
- Literally, 'the blue dome.' A classical Persian poetic term for the sky or the celestial sphere, representing the visible, physical cosmos.
