M3:3277 — گر بیاموزم زیان کارش بود / ور نیاموزم دلش بد می‌شود

This couplet captures the heart of Moses's predicament as he speaks to God. A man has obsessively pleaded to be taught the language of animals, a form of hidden knowledge. Moses, as a prophet, foresees that this knowledge will bring the man not wisdom, but ruin (ziyān). The man, however, is so fixated on his desire that he sees Moses's refusal not as a protective measure, but as a personal rejection from God's representative on earth.

Moses is caught between two negative outcomes. The first path—granting the wish—leads to the man's spiritual and worldly destruction, as he lacks the capacity to handle such power. The second path—denying the wish—will cause the man's heart to "go bad" (del-ash bad mi-shavad), meaning he will become resentful, lose faith, and turn away from the very prophet who is trying to save him. The beyt thus highlights a recurring theme in the Masnavi: the danger of spiritual gifts or powers when given to those who are not prepared for them, and the tragic inability of the spiritually immature to recognize true guidance when it contradicts their worldly desires.
