Stop being so preoccupied with your ego-self, and pay attention to the divine Beloved who is the true appraiser and 'buyer' of your soul.
Rumi uses a stark, commercial metaphor to make a spiritual point. The "sack of your own self" (jovāl-e nafs) is the suffocating confinement of the ego, a space of self-obsession where one's true value is hidden. To crawl inside it is to be consumed by personal desires, fears, and pride.
The beyt is a command to stop this inward, ego-centric journey. Instead, one must look outward to the "buyers" (kharīdārān). In the context of Sufi poetry, the ultimate 'Buyer' is God, the divine Beloved who alone knows the soul's real worth and seeks to 'purchase' it with grace and love. By becoming oblivious to this Buyer, the soul remains unsold, unvalued, and trapped within the cheap sackcloth of its own making. The path to spiritual honor (ʿizz) lies in offering oneself to the divine, not in hoarding the self away.
- A large sack, often made of coarse material like burlap or jute; a gunnysack. Rumi uses it here to create a rustic, visceral image for the confining and worthless nature of the ego.
- The self, ego, or psyche. In Sufi thought, it often refers to the lower, unrefined self (nafs-e ammāra) associated with base desires, pride, and spiritual heedlessness, which must be disciplined and purified.
- Literally, 'buyers' or 'purchasers'. In this mystical context, it refers to the divine Beloved (God) or spiritual guides who recognize and seek out the true worth of a sincere soul, contrasting with the self's own poor estimation.
- Heedless, oblivious, negligent, unmindful. A key term in Islamic ethics and Sufism, denoting a state of spiritual forgetfulness, especially of God.
