After striving to the limits of his own ability, the spiritual seeker is transformed from an active agent into one who is passively carried and accepted by divine grace.
This couplet marks a pivotal moment in the spiritual journey, describing the transition from active effort to passive reception. Rumi has just distinguished between two kinds of helplessness: the false helplessness of the lazy, who use determinism (jabr) as an excuse for inaction, and the true helplessness of the sincere seeker who has exhausted all personal effort.
The verse describes this second type of person. Having striven in the path of God to the point of "breaking his foot" (M1:1079), he is no longer required to walk on his own. He was a ḥāmil, a bearer or carrier of the burdens of religious practice and discipline. Now, he becomes maḥmūl, the one who is carried, lifted up by a divine power beyond his own, like the Prophet on the celestial steed Buraq.
Similarly, he was qābil-i farmān, one who was fit to receive and obey commands. Now, he becomes maqbūl, one who is accepted and beloved by the Commander. This transformation signifies a radical shift in spiritual status. The seeker's will has been so aligned with the Divine Will that he moves from the rank of a servant who obeys to that of a beloved intimate who is cherished and empowered. The following verses confirm this, stating that he will now become a commander himself, an agent of the divine will in the world.
- Literally 'carrier' or 'bearer'. In this context, one who actively carries the responsibilities and practices of the religious path.
- Literally 'carried' or 'borne'. The passive participle of the same root as 'ḥāmil', indicating one who is now being transported by a power outside himself.
- Literally 'receptive', 'capable of', or 'worthy of'. Here it means one who is in a position to receive and accept commands.
- Literally 'accepted', 'received', or 'approved'. It implies being not just accepted but welcomed and beloved by the one who gives commands.
