M1:1565 — یاد یاران یار را میمون بود / خاصه کان لیلی و این مجنون بود

This verse is part of the caged parrot's message to its free brethren in India. The parrot has just described its miserable life in a cage while its friends enjoy the freedom of the meadows and rose-gardens. It implores them to remember it, even with just a single morning toast.

This couplet elevates that plea from a simple request to a statement of principle. The first line, "For a lover, the memory of friends is a blessing," establishes a general truth: remembrance is auspicious and vital in any relationship of love. The second line, however, intensifies this dramatically by invoking the archetypal figures of Layli and Majnun. By casting the free parrots as "Layli" (the distant, beautiful beloved) and itself as "Majnun" (the maddened, suffering lover), the caged parrot defines their relationship as one of passionate, all-consuming love (ʿishq). In such a relationship, remembrance is not merely a blessing; it is the very lifeline of the lover, the proof that the sacred bond still exists despite the torment of separation.
