Translation & meaning
Translation: This discourse is milk in the breast of the soul; without a suckler, it flows not well. Meaning: Mowlana states that spiritual truths and profound insights, like milk ready in a breast, require an eager recipient or 'suckler' to flow and achieve their full potential. Without this demand and draw, these illuminations remain concealed and dormant.
Explanation
This verse is, in fact, one of the keys to understanding why the Masnavi came into being. I have often said that Mowlana himself, in an unspoken language, conveys that his status is not that of a prophet. Prophets, like a "traveling physician with his medicine" (ṭabīb dawwār bi-ṭibbihi), actively seek out the ill and save them from perdition; their mission requires them to pursue people and deliver the divine message, for "he is anxious over you, grievous to him is your suffering" (Quran 9:128). Mystics, however, do not operate in this manner. They are more akin to the Kaaba, standing steadfast, while people must endure the hardship of travel and hasten towards it to gain any benefit. Mowlana, in this verse, explicitly states that this "discourse"—or, to put it another way, this sea of knowledge and wisdom flowing within the "breast of his soul"—required a "suckler" (kashanda) to begin its flow. This suckler was, without a doubt, Husam al-Din Chalabi, whose insistent request and persistence caused this "milk" to stream forth from Mowlana's soul. Had Husam al-Din not existed, had this demand and pull not been at play, this immense spiritual legacy now known as the Masnavi would not have been expanded in such a way, and perhaps would never have reached us. This discourse is like pure water flowing through the mill of Mowlana's soul, but not for his own sake; rather, "the flowing of this water through the mill is for your sake." This means that wisdom manifests and flows not for the sage himself, but for those who seek and yearn for it. This fundamental distinction separates Mowlana's mystical position from the prophetic, demonstrating that the Masnavi emerged from Mowlana's soul not by the compulsion of a mission, but by the will of a demand.
Key takeaways
- The Masnavi is a product of audience demand and receptivity, not unilateral proclamation.
- The mystic's role differs from the prophet's: the mystic awaits the eager seeker.
- Husam al-Din Chalabi was the essential 'suckler' who enabled the flow of Mowlana's spiritual discourse.
- Latent wisdom and insights require a receptive, eager vessel to manifest and flow.
- The very existence of the Masnavi is rooted in an act of invitation and demand, not direct divine command.
