In this story, the wife tells her husband that true sincerity (ṣidq) means offering everything you have, holding nothing back, no matter how humble it may seem to you.
This couplet is the pivot in the story of the desert Arab. He and his wife are poor, and their most precious possession is a jar of rainwater. The wife encourages him to take this, their entire material wealth, as a gift to the Caliph in Baghdad. Her words define an essential Sufi concept of sincerity (ṣidq).
Sincerity, in this context, is not merely telling the truth. It is a state of being in which one's inner state and outer action are perfectly aligned. The wife's counsel is that true devotion requires giving from one's very essence (bud-e khwish) and with one's total effort (majhud-e khwish). It means to “rise up” (bar-khizi) and offer everything, detaching completely from the gift and the self that gives it. The value of the gift is not in its objective worth—which, as the reader knows, is nil in Baghdad where the Tigris flows—but in the totality of the giver's sacrifice.
Rumi will later allegorize this humble jar of rainwater as the human body and its limited senses, offered to God. This beyt establishes the ethical foundation for that allegory: the only gift worthy of the Divine is the complete offering of one's own limited existence.
- صدق
- ṣidq. An important Sufi and ethical term meaning sincerity, truthfulness, and authenticity. It signifies a complete correspondence between one's inner state, speech, and actions.
- بود
- bud. Literally 'being' or 'existence'. Here it refers to one's entire substance, assets, and selfhood.
- پاک برخیزی
- pāk bar-khizi. Literally 'you rise up clean/purely'. The phrase implies a complete and total action, leaving nothing behind—to be utterly divested of what you are giving away.
- مجهود
- majhud. An Arabic loanword meaning 'effort' or 'exertion'. In this context, it signifies giving with all of one's strength and capacity.
