M1:2721

To fill the vessel of the self with divine reality, one must first close off the five senses, which are channels for worldly desire, in obedience to God's command.
This couplet marks a crucial shift in the story of the Bedouin's gift. Rumi has just established the human body as a jar (کوزه) with five pipes (لوله)—the five senses. The water inside is our sensory experience, often brackish and limited. Now, he introduces the core Sufi practice required for spiritual transformation.
The first line is a direct command: seal the pipes of the senses. This isn't about ascetic self-denial but about redirecting one's focus. The senses, when left open to the world, constantly draw in worldly data and feed our egoistic desires. To receive the pure 'water' of divine knowledge from the infinite source (the خم, or vat), these external inlets must be managed. It is an act of turning inward, away from the flood of external stimuli, to create a space that can be filled from a higher source.
The second line grounds this command in sacred authority by quoting an Arabic phrase that echoes the Qur'anic injunction to "lower the gaze" (ghuḍḍū abṣārakum), explicitly linking it to subduing worldly passion (hawā). By closing the 'pipes' of the senses, the spiritual seeker is obeying a divine imperative to turn away from the distractions of the lower self. This act of spiritual discipline is the prerequisite for the 'jar' of the self to be filled not with its own salty water, but with the endless, sweet water of the divine ocean.
- Literally 'pipes' or 'tubes.' In this context, Rumi uses it as a metaphor for the five senses, which act as channels connecting the inner self to the external world.
- خم
- A large vat or jar, typically for wine. In Sufi poetry, it symbolizes the divine source, the ocean of unity, or the spiritual master's heart, from which the seeker's small vessel can be filled.
- (Arabic) 'Lower your gazes from passion/desire.' A phrase combining the Qur'anic command to 'lower the gaze' (Qur'an 24:30-31) with the concept of *hawā* (capricious, ego-driven desire). It serves as a scriptural warrant for the discipline of the senses.
