M3:827 — ناامید از هر دو عالم گشته‌اند / خارهای بی‌نهایت کشته‌اند

This couplet refers to those who, unlike the angels Harut and Marut who were initially eager to descend to Earth to rectify human injustice, have fallen into utter despair. In the story, Harut and Marut, witnessing humanity's corruption, boast to God that they would do better if placed in similar circumstances. God challenges them, and they succumb to temptation. This beyt, however, speaks of a different kind of failure: those who have not only failed the divine test but have also lost all hope in any form of redemption or spiritual progress. Their despair is so profound that they have 'planted endless thorns'—meaning their actions and outlook have only led to further suffering and bitterness, both for themselves and potentially for others. This is contrasted with the angels' initial eagerness and later regret, highlighting the destructive nature of complete hopelessness in the face of worldly trials.
