To see the true beauty of the Beloved, you must stop looking with your own subjective, limited vision and learn to see through the eyes of those who are already captivated by love.
This couplet is a direct instruction on the epistemology of love. Rumi has just established that perception is relative: what one person sees as poison, another sees as honey. Applying this to the spiritual path, he argues that our personal, unrefined perception (our "own eyes") is unreliable for seeing the true nature of the Divine Beloved.
Our ordinary sight is conditioned by ego, habit, and self-interest, making us prone to boredom (malāl) and aversion (sīrī), as mentioned in the following lines. To overcome this, Rumi proposes a radical shift in perspective. The seeker must metaphorically "borrow" the eyes of true lovers (ʿushshāq). This means adopting the perspective of those whose vision has been purified by love, allowing them to see the constant beauty and goodness of the Beloved, even in what might otherwise seem undesirable.
The act of "borrowing" is a crucial step in Sufi training, signifying the imitation of the master and the absorption of the spiritual state of the community. It is a temporary measure, a bridge to an even higher state described in the next couplet: borrowing the Beloved's own eyes to see Himself.
- عاریت کن
- Literally 'borrow' or 'take on loan'. In this context, it means to adopt or temporarily make use of a perspective or quality that is not yet one's own, as a means of spiritual training.
- عشاق
- Plural of *ʿāshiq* (عاشق), 'lovers'. In Sufi terminology, this refers to ardent devotees on the spiritual path, those consumed by love for God.
- خوشچشم
- Literally 'good-eye' or 'pleasant to the eye'. It refers to that which your personal, subjective eye finds attractive or pleasing, based on conventional or ego-driven criteria.
