M2:164 — رفتن یک منزلی بر بوی ناف / بهتر از صد منزلِ گام و طواف

This couplet is the climax of a metaphor comparing the spiritual seeker to a hunter tracking a musk deer. At the beginning of the path, the hunter relies on external signs—the deer's footprints (gām). This represents the stage of discipleship that involves discipline, imitation, and following the outward forms of the tradition.

However, as the hunter gets closer, he catches the powerful scent of the deer's musk gland (nāf). This scent is an internal, direct, and unmistakable guide. It represents the stage of spiritual maturity where the seeker is no longer just following rules but is guided by an inner certainty and a direct perception of the divine reality. Rumi's point is that this intuitive, heart-centered guidance is exponentially more effective and valuable than the preliminary stage of external observance. One moment of genuine inner knowing propels the seeker further than a lifetime of mechanical practice.
