Translation & meaning
Translation: Whatever man performs, the monkey does the same, / For it observes man moment by moment. Meaning: This verse uses the example of a monkey, which acts purely out of imitation, to underscore the fundamental difference between outward action and inner intention.
Explanation
This profound couplet unveils one of the most critical teachings of the Masnavi: the startling disparity between the outward appearance of actions and their inner intentions. Rumi cautions us against judging solely by superficial resemblances, for though the monkey's act may outwardly mirror a human's, it lacks the essential consciousness, intention, and conscience that lend meaning to human action.
This precise distinction is what Rumi employs in his analogy of Pharaoh's and Mansur Hallaj's respective pronouncements of "I am God" (Ana al-Haqq). Both uttered the same phrase, yet one spoke from a state of annihilation and absorption in the Divine, while the other spoke from hubris and opposition to the Divine. One brought blessing, the other damnation. The outward expression was identical, but their inner states were worlds apart. The monkey perfectly exemplifies one who acts like a human but is oblivious to the why and how of that action. It presumes, "I did as he did," yet "How can this contentious one discern the difference?" This "contentious" nature, a state of opposition and ignorance, marks the point of divergence.
The key to understanding this difference lies in the concept of ṭabaʿ (divine sealing) or the death of conscience. I have often said that "conscience" is a modern term; in our classical literature, the word sharm (shame/decency) was more prevalent. A person of conscience is a person of sharm. When one's conscience is alive, even if they commit an error, they will inwardly reproach themselves. But when this conscience is extinguished and dies—when a person does wrong and tells themselves it was right, suffocating the voice of conscience—that is when the individual is truly spiritually dead. This is precisely the meaning of ṭabaʿ Allāhu ʿalā qulūbihim (God has sealed their hearts) in the Quran, where God closes the windows of intellect, fairness, and sharm. A shameless person, which is the worst possible attribute, fears no vice and does not even reproach themselves. The monkey, in its imitative acts, also lacks this awakened conscience; otherwise, it would know the difference.
Rumi similarly uses the example of the hypocrite and the believer: both perform ritual prayer (namāz) in the mosque, bowing and prostrating. But the believer prays out of divine amr (command) and obedience, while the hypocrite engages in this outward act out of satīza (contention) and enmity towards faith. The outer form is identical, but the intention and purpose—the inner reality of the action—are entirely different. This world, as Rumi says, is a realm of mixtures and blendings; "bitter sea and sweet sea" mingle, and "pure gold and counterfeit particle" exist side by side. In such a world, discerning truth from falsehood, and essence from imitation, requires an inner, spiritual "touchstone" (maḥak) that the monkey lacks. Distinguishing between these "boundaries and secrets" (marz va rāz) is the task of one with an awakened conscience and a truth-seeing eye; otherwise, we remain captive to mere appearances.
Key takeaways
- Essential Difference Behind Apparent Similarity: The actions of a monkey and a human, though alike in form, fundamentally differ in intention and consciousness.
- Monkey-like Imitation: An action devoid of awareness, conscience, or genuine intent, performed merely out of observation and superficial mimicry.
- Death of Conscience and Divine Sealing (ṭabaʿ): The extinguishing of conscience signifies spiritual death and the closing of the doors of understanding, fairness, and shame.
- Pharaoh's and Hallaj's "I am God": The same phrase, yet vastly different in inner state and consequence (damnation versus blessing).
- Believer's and Hypocrite's Prayer: Another example of an outwardly identical action whose inner reality (obedience versus contention) is entirely different.
- Need for a 'Touchstone' (Maḥak) in a World of Mixtures: In a world where truth and falsehood, and genuine and counterfeit, are intermingled, discernment requires inner insight.
