All prophetic speech, like that of Jesus or Adam, is not self-generated but is a reflection of a higher, silent spiritual source, just as Mary's glory enabled Jesus's miracles or the Divine Breath gave Adam life.
This couplet uses two foundational prophetic stories to illustrate that true spiritual authority and eloquence are never original to the speaker but are always derivative of a divine source.
The first hemistich, "The speech of Jesus came from Mary’s splendor," directly follows a verse comparing silent saints to Mary, pregnant with a Messiah without a husband. Rumi argues that Jesus's power to speak from the cradle and perform miracles was not his own but a manifestation of the spiritual rank and purity—the farr (divine splendor)—of his mother, Mary. She was the silent, receptive vessel whose inner state made his outer miracle possible.
The second hemistich expands this principle to the dawn of humanity. "The speech of Adam was a ray of that same Breath" refers to the Qur'anic account of God breathing His spirit into Adam (Qur'an 15:29, 38:72). Adam's subsequent ability to name all things, the very foundation of human consciousness and speech (nuṭq), was merely a reflection (partow) of that divine in-breathing (dam). In both cases, the manifest prophet (Jesus, Adam) is an expression of a prior, more fundamental spiritual reality (Mary's purity, God's Breath). This reinforces the section's broader theme: the authority of the Friends of God, like Ali, flows from their connection to the prophetic light, not from personal merit.
- Nuṭq: Articulate speech, eloquence, reason. In Sufism and Islamic philosophy, it signifies the rational soul, the faculty that distinguishes humans from animals. Here, it refers to the inspired, miraculous speech of prophets.
- فر
- Farr: An ancient Persian concept of God-given glory, splendor, and legitimacy to rule. In an Islamic context, it signifies a kind of divine aura or spiritual charisma that empowers a holy figure.
- ʿĪsā: The Arabic and Persian name for Jesus, revered in Islam as a major prophet, particularly noted for his miraculous birth and his ability to speak from the cradle.
- Maryam: The Arabic and Persian name for Mary, the mother of Jesus. She is a figure of immense veneration in Islam, seen as a model of purity, receptivity, and devotion.
- Partow: A ray, reflection, or gleam of light. It emphasizes that the thing seen is not the source of light itself, but a derivative manifestation of it.
- Ān dam: Literally, "that breath." A direct reference to the Divine Breath (nafakhtu fīhi min rūḥī, "I breathed into him of My Spirit") that God breathed into Adam to give him life and consciousness, as described in the Qur'an.
