المعنى والشرح · به زبانِ تو — بلغتك · AI
You spent your life absorbed in the trivial complexities of your worldly craft, and only at the moment of your physical death do you finally understand what it means to 'die' to the self.
This couplet is the climax of a warning. Rumi has been describing a person so consumed by their worldly profession—its 'subtleties' and 'fine points' (daqāyiq)—that they have been deaf to the constant call of mortality. For years, death has been beating its drum, but the person only pays attention at the very end, during the final agony (nazʿ).
The first line, "You wove yourself into the finest details," uses the powerful image of weaving (bāftan) to describe a life spent entangling the self in worldly minutiae. This isn't just being busy; it's an act of self-construction where one's identity becomes inseparable from trivial concerns.
The second line delivers the tragic irony. The Prophet's famous saying, "Die before you die," is a call to a voluntary, spiritual death—an annihilation of the ego to find true life in God. This person, however, ignored that call. Only now, facing the involuntary, biological death they can't escape, do they finally comprehend the 'secret' (ramz) they were meant to learn through spiritual practice. The understanding comes too late, discovered in panic instead of in peace.
- دقایق
- Plural of 'daqīqa'. Literally 'minutes' or 'subtleties'. In this context, it refers to the minute, intricate, and ultimately trivial details of worldly crafts, sciences, or concerns that absorb a person's attention and prevent spiritual awareness.
- در بافتی
- From the verb 'bāftan' (to weave), with the prefix 'dar-' (in, into). It means 'you wove [yourself] into' or 'you entangled'. The image suggests a deliberate and intricate process of enmeshing oneself in something.
- رمز
- A secret, a mystery, a symbol, an esoteric code. Here it signifies the profound, hidden meaning of the spiritual death ('dying before you die') that the person has failed to grasp until the moment of physical death.
