True lovers seek the entirety of existence, the Divine, not merely its transient manifestations; whoever fixes their desire on a partial aspect of reality will ultimately be separated from the complete truth.

In Rumi's Sufi context, the 'Whole' refers to the absolute, undifferentiated Reality of God, the source of all existence. The preceding story, to which this beyt belongs, illustrates this point through the metaphor of a lover of a wall. The wall, illuminated by the sun, appears radiant and beautiful. The misguided lover, however, attributes this beauty to the wall itself, rather than to the sun that casts its light upon it. When the sun inevitably moves or sets, the wall loses its luster, and the lover is left with nothing but a dull, lifeless object. This is precisely the fate of one who becomes 'مشتاق جزو' – yearning for the part.

بنابراین، بیت تأکید میکند که دلبستگی به «جزء» (دنیا، مقام، ثروت و دیگر مظاهر فانی) سرانجامی جز محرومیت از «کل» (حقیقت، خداوند، آرامش ابدی) ندارد. این راه، راهِ خسران و واماندگی است.
