Translation & meaning
Translation: When from the depths of his soul he uttered a cry, Then the sea of mercy came to a boil. Meaning: This verse signifies that a profound, heartfelt cry or sincere supplication from the depths of one's being evokes the surging tide of divine mercy and forgiveness.
Explanation
This verse marks the climax and turning point in the story of the king and the sick handmaiden; it is the moment when all worldly means fail, and the king is compelled to turn towards God. Here, the very notion of causality, as philosophers understand it, is fundamentally challenged. Mystics, especially Mawlana, are not comfortable with strict causality; they seek to bring God directly into the world, unmediated by secondary causes. I have said this repeatedly in my lectures, citing Mawlana: "I am a Sophist due to His cause-destroying acts." That is, sometimes God so utterly disrupts the web of causes and effects that one is left in utter bewilderment.
The king, who had previously relied on the physicians' abilities, now witnesses their helplessness. He runs barefoot, with a broken heart, to the mosque. This 'barefoot' pilgrimage symbolizes the shedding of all worldly distinctions, status, and power; it is an emblem of utter destitution before the Divine Presence. In the mihrab, his place of prostration is drenched with tears. This is no longer a prayer of the tongue, but a "cry from the midst of the soul" (khurūsh az miyān-i jān). This expression is crucial; it refers to a lament arising from the very root and core of one's being, not merely from speech or intellect.
The key lesson Mawlana imparts here, and one I consistently emphasize, is the inversion of causality. We often assume that our prayer, our cry, our lament, is the cause of divine mercy's descent. However, Mawlana reverses this relationship. He states: "When God wills to accomplish something, He places that prayer upon the supplicant's tongue." In other words, it is the prior divine will for mercy and grace that instills in the servant's heart the profound cry of supplication. Thus, the surging of the "sea of mercy" (bahr-i bakhshāyish) is the cause, and this "cry from the soul" is the effect of that prior divine will and grace. This does not mean our prayers are ineffectual; rather, their efficacy is not causal but revelatory. They are a sign, a symbol, of the imminent realization of divine favor. Our prayer is a testimony to God's inclination to bestow bounty.
Mawlana illustrates this point further in the tale of Sheikh Ahmad Khazrouyeh and the halva seller in Book Two of the Masnavi: "Unless the child weeps, how will it drink milk?" Or, "Unless the cloud weeps, how will the meadow smile?" He goes even further, stating that the Sheikh deliberately causes the halva seller's child to weep so that the "pot of divine mercy" might boil. The child's tears, therefore, are not the cause of mercy, but a means for the manifestation of a grace that was already in motion.
Ultimately, this verse paints a vivid picture of the moment of divine unveiling and the descent of divine grace. After the failure of all human endeavors and a sincere cry from the soul, this grace appears on the stage of existence, like a surging, majestic sea. This is the very promise of the Masnavi: that separation leads to union, and the pain of longing to the healing balm of mercy.
Key takeaways
- A sincere cry from the depths of the soul is a sign of God's prior will to grant mercy.
- In mystical wisdom, the supplicant's cry is the effect of divine will, not its cause.
- The failure of worldly means often paves the way for the direct manifestation of divine grace.
- The 'cry from the soul' is a lament arising from the root of one's being, not merely from speech.
- The concept of causality is inverted in the mystical view: mercy gives rise to the cry.

Bu bayt shuni anglatadiki, chin yurakdan, jon-jahd bilan qilingan nola va samimiy duo Allohning rahmati va marhamati joʻsh urishiga sabab boʻladi.
Ushbu bayt podshoh va bemor kanizak haqidagi hikoyaning choʻqqisi va burilish nuqtasidir. Bu yerda barcha dunyoviy sabablar va choralar ish bermay qolib, podshoh noiloj Alloh dargohiga yuzlanadi. Bundan avval tabiblar mahoratiga suyangan podshoh endi ularning ojizligini koʻrib, singan qalb bilan yalangoyoq masjidga yuguradi. Uning "yalangoyoq" yugurishi barcha dunyoviy martaba, mansab va oʻzlikni bir chetga surib qoʻyish ramzidir; Haq huzuridagi mutlaq yoʻqsillik belgisidir. Uning sajdagohi koʻz yoshlaridan hoʻl boʻladi. Bu endi tildagi shunchaki duo emas, balki "jon ummonidan koʻtarilgan figʻon"dir.
Biz koʻpincha duoyimiz, nolamiz ilohiy rahmatning nozil boʻlishiga sabab boʻladi, deb oʻylaymiz. Ammo Mavlono bu munosabatni aksincha talqin qiladi. Uning fikricha, "Alloh biror ishni qilishni istasa, oʻsha duoni bandaning tiliga solib qoʻyadi". Boshqacha aytganda, Allohning marhamat qilishga boʻlgan azaliy irodasi bandaning qalbida chin ixlos bilan duo qilish va nola chekish istagini paydo qiladi. Demak, "rahm dengizining joʻsh urishi" sabab, "jon ummonidan chiqqan figʻon" esa oʻsha azaliy iroda va inoyatning oqibatidir. Bu duolarimiz behuda degani emas, balki ularning taʼsiri sababiy emas, kashfiydir, yaʼni ilohiy lutfning yaqinda roʻyobga chiqishining belgisi va nishonasidir.
Xulosa qilib aytganda, bu bayt barcha insoniy tadbirlar puchga chiqqanidan va jondan samimiy figʻon otilib chiqqanidan soʻng, mavjlanib turgan ulugʻvor bir dengiz misoli vujud sahnasiga chiqib kelgan ilohiy marhamat va yordam lahzasini tasvirlaydi.

When the king cried out with a prayer from the very core of his being, God's boundless mercy was stirred into action.
This couplet is the turning point in the story. After the king's physicians fail, he abandons his royal status and worldly means, running barefoot to the mosque. His prayer is not a mere formality but a khurūsh az miyān-i jān (a cry from the midst of the soul)—a desperate, sincere appeal from the root of his existence.
The imagery of the "Sea of Forgiveness" coming to a boil signifies an immense and powerful divine response. However, Rumi, as interpreted here, presents a profound mystical challenge to our usual understanding of cause and effect. We might think the king's desperate prayer caused God's mercy to appear. But the deeper truth is the reverse: God's pre-existing will to show mercy is what caused the king to offer such a sincere prayer in the first place. The king's cry is not the cause of grace, but the sign that grace is about to manifest.
This inversion of causality is a key theme. The failure of all human effort (the physicians) creates the necessary emptiness for a direct divine intervention. The king's heartfelt supplication is the effect, not the cause, of a divine will already in motion, just as a child's cry for milk is the expression of a need that a mother is already inclined to fulfill. The prayer is the visible evidence of an imminent, unseen act of divine favor.
